WR Jeremiah Smith (All B1G, B1G Frosh/WR of Year, All-American)

Most definitely.

This is the high point of many of these kids lives so far, and for a majority probably the highest point as so few make it to the next level, much less become stars at the next level.

But for a high school kid the courting from many programs probably feels nice (especially since a fair number of recruits might not come from ideal, supportive home conditions).

Attention and acclaim are hard for adults to deal with, much less kids.
Exactly! I always think I couldn't imagine being a 3star recruit, let alone 5star in this day and age! Man, ya'll would HATE me! Cincinnati kid who acts like a SoFL kid. And I'd know I'd be going to OSU the entire time, but would take all the visits I could. And I was a middle class kid, I couldn't imagine coming from some poor neighborhoods(not saying JJ does) like a number of these kids do. And knowing that 1 tweet, removed profile pic, ambigious post, etc and I can send millions of grown ups into a tailspin! There's fans in like Dayton, Solon, Mason, etc who lost their minds, had their nights ruined and took it personal that a 16yo from Miami, FL took a picture down. I remember when a kid a few years ago put out a tweet regarding a family member, and fans(not sure the fan base) went crazy because they took it as a negative post to their team. That's INSANE! Exhibit A of one of the craziest recruiting journeys, and when I knew that social media had swung MASSIVELY in favor for the teenagers was saga of Torrance Gibson. I haven't seen a roller coaster recruiting like that one online before that

Long way to go until NSD. Strap in your seatbelt it’s going to be a bumpy ride
He will be a Buckeye in the end. But this won't be for the faint of heart. I don't even think I'll update all of the ups and downs, because we'll all be feeling like Fred G. Sanford calling for Elizabeth

I'm very passionate, and sometimes over the top passionate, about college football. I definitely get obsessed and let the fluctuations of game results have an effect on my mood and actions way more than I logically know I should.

That said, some people need other hobbies or things in their lives if they are reacting to recruiting at this level. Sure if a kid trolls or flips I won't be happy, but I'll shrug it off and move on with my day right after I hear it.

Most of the people on social media that tweet at or trash recruits have zero affiliation with the university they are supposedly fans of. Just people clinging to college athletes because they never amounted to anything in their own lives. I’m pretty sure it’s that way at every BigTime school

Birm with a great perspective on the recruitment this morning. He still believes Smith will be a Buckeye as long as Day and Hartline are there, but to look at the visits and the the hubub on social media in a vacuum where Ohio State doesn't exist. Basically, he's going to Ohio State and all this is to figure out who #2 is should something happen with Day and Hartline.

Also, in the NIL world, social media followers = money and this is how he gets more followers.

Kind of like in the CFB/recruiting websites world, more drama= more subscribers. So a kid who commits early is a boring story. But if he visits a school, making an article on him "possibly" flipping gets more eyes on that article, more fans chatting on message boards and then more sub purchases. The kids are doing nothing different than the sites who report on them

I am not concerned at all if the only consideration was our coaches and the relationships they build. I think they are really damn good at what they do, especially Hartline as we've seen. If after all that a kid decides to go elsewhere it wasn't mean to be and you move on. What DOES concern me is emotional toddler "fans" reaching out to these kids and saying stuff that turns tides. If you are getting anywhere closer to these kids than these forums you have issues and you are a liability to the program's success.

FWIW - The Dawgs have apparently backed off Mr. Smith
He was welcomed at our recruit open house weekend and apparently enjoyed himself with some of our players and other recruits but came away firm that he's with Ohio State for now.
247 has Mr. Wingo, (#2 WR from St. Louis) as 100% crystal ball to UGA so that appears to be where our focus is now.

That's just me reading the tea leaves. I could be dead wrong but it certainly seems to be trending that way.

Every fanbase now with social media has the emotional toddlers, and the increased recruiting coverage has only made it worse...many of which I would venture to guess are not fans. Doesn't make it less frustrating to true fans but I think most recruits seem savvy enough to see through it, or I hope so anyways. The Smith situation may have riled me up a tad back in my younger days, but now I just let things ride. And after all that it seems like there was much ado made about nothing, seems about as solid as a commit from the south gets.
