Q&A with Middletown quarterback Jalin Marshall
07/06/12
Written by mdyer
Middletown senior quarterback Jalin Marshall has already verbally committed to Ohio State after leading his team to a second straight 10-win regular season and a playoff berth. He was a guard on Middletown?s regional finalist basketball team and the state long jump champion with a leap of 23 feet and 0.75 inches besides performing in the high school?s show choir and in plays. There are plenty of high expectations for Marshall and the Middies this season, none bigger than the ones he and his teammates have placed on themselves. Marshall, who turns 17 on July 21, recently took time to answer a few questions with Enquirer contributor Kevin Goheen:
Question: Who?s your biggest rival?
Answer: Colerain? That?s the one team we?ve had trouble with in the past. Every time we come to that game, that?s the biggest game of the week.
Q: Best sports moment?
A: Winning the GMC for the first time my sophomore year. When we beat Princeton it felt so good to win and go 10-0 and undefeated. That made everyone proud.
Q: What do you like about playing quarterback?
A: The ball is in my hands all of the time and I determine where the play goes.
Q: Who?s the best football player you?ve faced?
A: Braxton Miller
Q: Ever sing for the team?
A: No, I haven?t. They?ve never asked me to
Q: What?s your favorite song?
A: I like ?Fear? by Drake. I like the lyrics and how the song goes
Q: Favorite subject in school?
A: Math
Q: What do you plan to study at OSU?
A: Sports management

Middletown QB Jalin Marshall speaks about Braxton Miller comparisons and reflects on last year?s loss to Moeller

The football feels right, feels best, to Jalin Marshall when it is in his hands. When Marshall takes the oblong leathered ball from his center, command of the field belongs to him. That has meant a lot of good things for the Middletown High School program the past two seasons.
Marshall, a six-foot, 200-pound senior quarterback, is the most dynamic and dangerous player in Southwestern Ohio. Norwood?s Marc Edwards (1992) is the only winner of the Ohio Associated Press Mr. Football to hail from the Greater Cincinnati area but Marshall, who has already verbally committed to Ohio State, will be a contender for that honor this year.
For all of the awards and accolades Marshall has received his favorite memory offers a glimpse into his makeup.
?Winning the (Greater Miami Conference) for the first time my sophomore year,? said Marshall. ?When we beat Princeton it felt so good to win and go 10-0 and undefeated. That made everyone proud.?
Middletown has won 10 games each of the last three seasons, including that perfect 10-0 regular season in 2010 when it won a share of its first GMC title since 1990. But the Middies, for all of the tradition that the program and the school has, have never won a regional championship.
That 2010 Middletown team was beaten in the first round of the Division I playoffs by current OSU quarterback Braxton Miller and Huber Heights Wayne, 21-0. Wayne narrowly made the playoffs that season but with Miller at the helm the Warriors nearly won the state title before falling to Lakewood St. Edward.
Marshall doesn?t see why a similar run with a better end result can?t happen for him and the Middies.
?I think it?s a fair comparison (with Miller) because I?ve brought that upon myself,? said Marshall. ?When you?re a kid who tends to do well they will put pressure on that one kid but I have confidence in my team that we?ll be able to do it together. I don?t have to do it all myself. I think my team will come more into play during the season.?
