Scout $ - ELITE 11: Jalin Marshall

5/4

Video by The Bank....Recaps his performance & says he did very well. Had a 'friendly' competition with Shane Morris, between throwing & each running a route. Says his goals for his Senior season are winning a state title & Mr. Ohio. Hasn't talked to the staff about a set position, but will throw for them in the Spring.

Can't wait to see this kid on the field

Marshall represents Ohio State well in top group

DSC_0450.JPG

Though a Michigan Man took home MVP honors, Ohio State did just fine at the Elite 11 thanks to Middletown (Ohio) athlete Jalin Marshall. A little bit of a do-everything player in high school, the dual-threat quarterback went throw-for-throw with commitments from across the country and more than held his own at the two-hour throwing session.

"It's always fun to come out and compete," Marshall said. "I definitely had something to prove. You go places and people always say that I can't throw or I can't do this or that. I came out here today and proved a lot of people wrong."

The 6-foot-1, 190-pounder showed off solid footwork and was extremely accurate on intermediate passes and out routes. Though he didn't start out in the top group, Marshall showed constant improvement as the afternoon went on and ended up as one of the top players in the final group.

"This is my school, this is my hometown for the next four years so I definitely had to come out and represent," he said. "I think I did that."

Marshall was one of the first commitments for the Buckeyes in the class of 2013 and is expected to head to the program as a wide receiver. Based on his performance at the Elite 11 however, it's likely that he sees at least a few snaps as a backup quarterback should the need arise.

"Once (Urban Meyer) gets the news of how well I did out here, he's going to get excited," Marshall said. "Because Braxton (Miller) is still going to be there, (the coaches) want me to get on the field as soon as possible. I'll probably be a wide receiver but anything to help the team win."

Several of his fellow commits, such as defensive lineman Billy Price, will be in attendance at tomorrow's Nike Camp. The opportunity will also allow for Marshall and his future Buckeye teammates to bond and do a little recruiting together.

"I think we can get the top class in the nation," he said. "The guys we have committed are real good. Even the low stars are really good. We're coming together to be a family and we'll be alright."

Marshall sees time at quarterback and receiver

With Ohio State already having one quarterback commit (J.T. Barrett) and actively seeking a second in the 2013 class, it looks as if Jalin Marshall's career at quarterback could come to an end after his senior season at Middletown. Marshall does not necessarily see it that way, though.

On Friday, Marshall was solid competing in the Elite 11 drills. And at the NFTC, he spent the first half of the camp competing with the quarterbacks. At the end, Marshall felt he belonged right there with the others, which included Morris, Matt Alviti, Danny Etling, Malik Zaire and many more top quarterbacks.

"I think I mixed right in there with them," he said. "I didn't shy away from the competition, and I think that's what made it even better. I was confident and I made the same throws they made."

Still, the odds of Marshall being a full-time quarterback at Ohio State are not in his favor, and receiver is a more likely landing spot for the nation's eighth-ranked athlete. Toward the end of the camp, Marshall moved out to receiver. On one play, he squared off with Burrows, ranked No. 4 at cornerback in the country.

There was no clear-cut winner, as the quarterback overthrew Marshall and did not give him a chance to make a play on the ball.

When asked afterward who won, Burrows asked: "Did he catch the ball?"

Marshall had a slightly different conclusion.

"Ah, I won that," he said, smiling. "I had him burned."

Jalin Marshall shows versatility
Athlete Jalin Marshall, of Middletown, Ohio, worked out at the Elite 11 and the NFTC in Columbus, which somewhat symbolizes his potential future as a Buckeyes commitment.

Marshall, the No. 8 athlete and the No. 55 overall prospect in the country, believes he can compete at quarterback at the next level but is also willing to do whatever it takes to help his team as an athlete.

"I think I did real well bouncing around to different positions," he said. "I threw the ball well and they couldn't guard me at receiver. [Ohio State] is recruiting me as an athlete, so I have to go up there and throw for them, but for now it's an athlete."

Marshall showed why he's ranked as an athlete by impressing at receiver. Camp position coaches were impressed with his quickness, route running and ability to separate. Marshall recognizes that ability and says if he had the choice, receiver would be his pick in college.

"With Braxton [Miller] there right now, I would like to play slot, because with both of us on the field it would be dangerous," he said. "I went up against [Ohio State commit] Cam Burrows today. It was a bad ball but I burned him, so I think I could be dangerous at receiver."

Lance Johnson and Jalin Marshall made their presence felt Friday night in the finals of the Dayton Division I high school track and field meet at Welcome Stadium.

The juniors were Middletown?s only individuals in the track events and jumps. Usually the Middies are a challenger for boys team trophies at the district, regional and state level. This year, however, those sprinters and scorching relays teams were absent.

?A lot of guys who might have run thought they had to be in the weight room lifting for football,? said Marshall. ?Colleges recruit speed and quickness. But some guys don?t want to hear that. I know running track was a factor in a lot of schools looking at me for football.?

Marshall has given a verbal commitment to play at Ohio State. He won the long jump going 21-feet, 10.50 inches while Johnson was second at 21-10.

Marshall also won the high jump, clearing 6-6 and barely missing at 6-8.

The wind was not friendly to Middletown High School?s Jalin Marshall and Lance Johnson on Friday in the finals of the Dayton Division I region track meet at Welcome Stadium.

A stiff breeze blowing into their faces made Marshall?s efforts in the high jump and Johnson?s run in the 300 hurdles difficult at best.

But they prevailed. Marshall won the high jump, clearing 6 feet, 8 inches and barely missing at 6-11. Johnson was second in the wild finish in a personal-best time of 38.41 seconds. First place was 38.39 and third 38.64.

?When you came off the curve it was like hitting a wall with that wind,? Johnson said. ?We were all fighting it and struggling to get over the hurdles. But I qualified with my best time.?

Both juniors had already earned trips to state with second- and fourth-place finishes, respectively, in the long jump on Wednesday.

The top four in each event moved on to the Division I state meet at Ohio State?s Jesse Owens Stadium in Columbus next Friday and Saturday.

That is very good in high jump. I thought I remember seeing Devin Smith just clear 7 feet at a recent B1G meet.

I might compare him to Ginn, Jr. Running the hurdles like TG did is extremely difficult as is high jumping almost 6' 11.
