OSU football: Freshmen display unusual maturity

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

There was something encouraging about John Simon from the first time he showed up at Ohio State. Duron Carter showed it, too. Maturity, toughness -- each had that secret something it takes to earn playing time as a true freshman.

"You have to be tough no matter what position you play, and you can see that pretty quickly, who's a tough guy and who's not," receivers coach Darrell Hazell said.

He wasn't putting down anyone else but merely pointing out why Carter, son of former Ohio State All-America receiver Cris Carter, moved quickly into the rotation at receiver.

Hazell said that mental strength component is "huge." Carter has shown it since he first stepped on campus, which explains why he has five catches for 42 yards in four games.

"You can't play this game if you don't know what you're doing," Hazell said. "It might be a limited role, what we are asking you to do, but if you don't know your assignment, you slow way down. So it is critically important that you know what you're doing."
