WR Duron Carter (Official Thread)

Might be in this thread somewhere but I heard that TP is letting Duron have #2. If so... very classy.

Pryor did offer it, but I heard that Duran said that he wants his own number, set his own legacy, etc. Either way, it's going to be wierd/cool to see a Carter out there again playing WR, especially considering they have very similar styles.

WR Duron Carter, Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) St. Thomas Aquinas (Ohio State)

The Buckeyes lost their top two receivers and return only one receiver who had more than 20 catches. With super sophomore-to-be Terrelle Pryor finally taking over full-time duties at quarterback, he will be looking for receivers who can run precise routes and make tough catches look easy. Carter helped lead his team to an undefeated 5A state championship this past season, catching 39 passes for 738 yards and 14 touchdowns. Carter lacks big-time speed, but he proved at the Under Armour All-American practices that he can run excellent routes and catch anything within reach. He also excels at the little things like run blocking. Look for his work ethic and exceptional hands to earn him early playing time this fall.

YouTube - Like Father, Like Son?: Duron Carter

Duron Carter, WR, 6-3, 185

Fort Lauderdale, Fla. (Aquinas)

4 stars (average of Scout and Rivals rankings)

When I called the high school coaches of Florida-based Ohio State recruits Carlos Hyde and Duron Carter this week, they both started with the same joke.

"What? You haven't heard? He's going to Florida?"

Cris Carter's kid at Florida? Can't be. And it's not. Just recruiting humor.

When Carter left Ohio State after the 1986 season, he had more catches than anyone in the history of the Buckeyes. He still ranks second, surpassed only by David Boston. And now his son is coming to add to, and maybe take down, the Carter legacy.

"He's bigger than his dad now, at least taller," George Smith, Carter's coach at St. Thomas Aquinas in Fort Lauderdale, said this week. And he would know, since Cris Carter is the school's receivers coach.

"What you're going to get is a kid still growing, still maturing, and when the total package comes through, it's going to be unbelievable," Smith said. "He could be a big-time 'Wow' down the road. He has great hands, he's a great route runner, and does he look fast? Nah. Is he fast? Yeah."

11 champion Aquinas players sign college commitments
BY MIKE PHILLIPS
[email protected]

There was an elaborate presentation at St. Thomas Aquinas that included a live feed from CBS college sports, which sent Trev Alberts to present and briefly interview the 11 members of the national championship football team who signed letters of intent. MaxSports and members of the U.S. Army National Guard were on hand to present Aquinas and coach George Smith with their national championship trophy.

Receiver Duron Carter, the son of former NFL star Cris Carter, headed the list of Aquinas players headed for college. Carter will play at his father's alma mater, Ohio State, but it wasn't a decision from birth.

''I was a Michigan fan,'' said Duron, evoking pain from every Buckeye fan. ``But then I changed my mind when I went to Ohio State. That felt like the right place for me.''

And for Cris Carter.

''His mother and grandmother kept buying him all this Michigan stuff -- and they are from Ohio,'' said Carter, now an NFL analyst. ``He had Michigan basketball shirts, Michigan football shirts. He had a Michigan blanket on his bed. He wore a Braylon Edwards shirt. He even had a Michigan Fathead on the wall over his bed.''

''I never tried to influence him,'' Carter said. 'But when he changed his mind, I told him, `You have 30 days to get all that stuff out of this house.' I took the Fathead down myself.''

Cris was a legend at Ohio State, but neither Duron nor his father feel that will be a problem.

''Not at all,'' Duron said. ``I'm sure the coaches and the fans are confident of what I can do. It's not going a problem. There's no pressure at all on me [because of what my father did there].''

Duron Carter (8) changed his loyalties to Ohio State last April when he visited Ohio Stadium for the first time.

Duron Carter didn't know it at the time, but moments after he was born he was staring at his college future.

The site was the Ohio State University Medical Center, March 1991. The scene was a room on the north side of the hospital. It had all been arranged by his father, Cris Carter, because of the view from the window.

"It was Ohio Stadium," Cris Carter said. "What a magnificent sight."

And what an anecdote, considering Duron Carter, a receiver from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., signed a national letter of intent this week with Ohio State.

"You can't make it up," Cris Carter said. "And I didn't do that for the fact he was a boy. I just wanted him to see, from the beginning of his life, where my career really got started.

"And the thing about it, until about six months ago, he was the biggest Michigan fan I ever met. But he really loves the Buckeyes now, I am telling you. It's amazing."

Like someone who just quit smoking cold turkey, Duron Carter is a staunch Buckeye. Perhaps it's no coincidence that his leap from Michigan to Ohio State took place last April when he visited Ohio Stadium for the first time. Talk about a sense of dj vu.

"I changed my mind completely on that visit for the spring game," Duron Carter said. "Ohio State just blew me away. The sense of family and seeing how much football really means to the community up there all year long, it's where I wanted to play."

He let the world know about it soon enough, but he told his father first.

"I am sure he is very ecstatic with me going to Ohio State, his alma mater," Duron Carter said. "Any father would love for his son to go to his college. I think he definitely has a sense of pride knowing that I picked Ohio State."

"I'm going to tell you, I never thought Duron would go to Ohio State," Carter said. "I mean, we're in SEC country, and LSU and Florida were really recruiting him. But I think it is ultimately amazing for him to go sign with the school that I love, and the school that his mother graduated from. It is nothing you ever envisioned, but it is sweet, man."

WELCOME HOME DURON!

:oh:

 I was thinking the same thing.

I'm sure Cris enjoyed getting that junk out of his house!! I'm surprised he gave him 30 days, though.

If Duron does the things he needs to to get ready for summer camp (and I have no doubt that he will, on his own or with his fathers help) he could be a very big contributor this year. None of the returning WR's have separated themselves (Posey's youth, Dane's injuries, Small's indiscretions, TWash not yet stepping up) so there is a great opportunity for Carter to step up and at the very least become the third reciever and maybe become a starter, leaving Dane and Small to play their more natural slot spot.

Even if he doesn't become one of the starting two/three, not knowing how the offense will evolve in TP's second year, maybe more 4-5 reciever sets, Carter may well become one of TP's favorite targets, being tall and able to catch everything thrown your way would sure lead to that.

BN has a story on Duron. It's worth clicking on the link to see the imbedded video, which also has a couple of Cris's catches on it. If you haven't seen Cris's sideline catch in the Citrus Bowl before, you need to. And if you've seen it - you need to see it again.

Duron looks a little faster than 4.6 40, any updated time for him or is that what he has been running consistently? Either way I'm excited to have him as a Buckeye. I know that with my #2 jersey, if Pryor decides to let him wear it, I'd be more than happy to wear #2 for Duron.
