Wide receiver could be activated soon

Receiver DeVier Posey couldn?t hide his excitement when informed he might be activated from the physically unable to perform list next week ? in time to play against New Orleans on national television on Aug. 25.

Posey has been sidelined since undergoing surgery to repair a ruptured Achilles tendon, an injury he suffered in the playoff loss at New England.

?It would be up there with me coming back from my suspension,? Posey said about being suspended by the NCAA while playing at Ohio State. ?It would probably mean a lot more than that, just because I had to dig deep. I had to really pull myself out of this injury.?

Feeling Manziel?s pain

Posey was suspended by the NCAA two times for five games each during his last season with the Buckeyes. He defended embattled Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel, who could be suspended by the NCAA if it?s proved he accepted money from autograph brokers.

?I know what he?s going through,? Posey said. ?I know the witch hunting that goes on in the NCAA, how those (meetings with the NCAA) go. I know how mentally stressful they are and how hard it is to focus on football.

?I just feel his pain. What he did, people have to remember ? it?s not a crime. He?s still a good kid who loves football.?

Posey loves football, too, and the fact he might play so soon after suffering the injury is amazing.

?He?s worked extremely hard, and he?s been running a lot of routes the last two days,? coach Gary Kubiak said. ?It looks like we?re very close to pulling him off PUP after this game, and, hopefully, he?s back working next week.

?The thought process in the offseason was it probably wasn?t going to happen this early, but it sure looks like it?s got a chance. That would be a huge boost to our team.?

Posey, who was taken in the third round of the 2012 draft, had six catches for 87 yards in his rookie season and added four receptions for 47 yards and one touchdown in postseason play before getting hurt in the divisional game against the Patriots last January.

When the roster is reduced to 53, PUP players must be put on the roster or the in-season PUP that requires them to sit out six weeks.

?He has not missed a day,? Kubiak said. ?He?s been here every morning throughout the offseason. He came to me about a month-and-a-half after his surgery and said, ?Don?t count me out. I?ll make it to opening day.? He?s holding up his end of the bargain.?

Finding a silver lining

Posey was depressed after he was injured, but that mood didn?t last long.

?I remember the first week it happened,? he said. ?I said, ?All right, I?m going to be sad this first week, and after this I can?t be sad about it. I have to be a positive person. People have to feed off of me.?

?I went to Google and started researching guys who came back from Achilles (injuries). Just to be able to hear some guys come back and have successful careers, I said, ?There is a silver lining.? ?

DeVier Posey set to return to action Monday

A little more than seven months after tearing his Achilles tendon, second-year Texans wide receiver DeVier Posey is set to return to action during practice Monday.

?The two guys that we expect on the field (Monday) when we go to work are Posey and (Brennan) Williams,? Texans head coach Gary Kubiak said Sunday during a media interview.

Posey has been on the player unable to perform list. He tore his Achilles Jan. 13 during an AFC divisional playoff loss at New England and underwent surgery in February.

?I can?t wait to get back on the field,? Posey said earlier this week. ?This is what I?ve worked so hard for. I?ve really missed it.?

The return of Posey should immediately bolster a Texans receiving corps led by veteran Andre Johnson, rookie DeAndre Hopkins and Keshawn Martin.

Texans activate DeVier Posey from PUP list

The Texans returned to the practice field at Methodist Training Center today for what amounted to a glorified walk-through before they take off Tuesday. Then they return to practice on Wednesday to prepare for Sunday?s nationally televised game against New Orleans.

Second-year receiver DeVier Posey participated in practice. He was activated from the physically unable to perform list. He ran every route with the other receivers.

The news that wide receiver
DeVier Posey would receive after his Achilles surgery would be the words that would propel him through his difficult days of recovery.

“I’ll be totally honest,” Posey said. “When I went and got my surgery from Dr. Robert Anderson in North Carolina, he told me, ‘I think at five months you’ll be able to run routes.’ I knew it was something I held kind of close and dear to my heart because I didn’t want to set an expectation for myself and not be able to fulfill it and so it was like a personal goal that I had to be able to do things at six months and be close.”

Posey found inspiration in his other professional athletes who had sustained similar injuries and did his homework on them.

“I had a lot of free time when my leg was sitting up and icing in the cast and all those things and losing all my muscles,” Posey remembers. “I did a lot of research on guys who had Achilles, all the way back to like Dominique Wilkins. I looked at guys like Kendall Hunter, Da’quan Bowers, a bunch of guys just to see their progress and the milestones that they hit at whichever months. A big guy I looked at was Demaryius Thomas because he’s a wide receiver and we play similar positions so I knew I wanted to sort of mirror that kind of timeframe and maybe even push.”

Texans’ DeVier Posey could return against Cowboys

The second step in DeVier Posey’s return from a ruptured left Achilles tendon could occur Thursday during the Texans’ preseason finale against the Cowboys at AT&T Stadium.

Texans coach Gary Kubiak said Monday that Posey may play against Dallas, marking the first time the second-year wide receiver has appeared in a game since suffering his injury Jan. 13 during an AFC divisional-round playoff loss at New England.

“There is an excellent chance,” Kubiak said. “I want to watch him practice (Tuesday). Obviously we’ve got a very short, limited amount of time, but DeVier had real good work (Sunday). … If everything continues positive, I would like to see him get on the field and get some snaps because it’s been awhile.”

After seven long months of hard work and recovering from his Achilles surgery,
DeVier Posey will get a chance to play Thursday night.

“He practiced today,” Kubiak said on Tuesday. “I’m going to play him in the game. It’ll probably be a brief appearance, but he needs to just get out there and get his feet wet so to speak."

Posey was put on the active roster and removed from the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list on August 19. The second-year wide receiver is expected to take the field on Thursday during the Texans’ final preseason game at Dallas, but will be limited in reps.

“He’ll probably play about 12 plays,” Kubiak said. “Get hit. Get tackled. All that confidence he’s been working on, just make sure he’s ready to go. But he’s good.”

DeVier Posey starts, makes impact early vs. Cowboys

DeVier Posey started Thursday night for the Texans, and didn't wait long to contribute.

The second-year wide receiver returned from an achilles injury he suffered in the playoff loss at New England, and caught an 7-yard pass on the team's first offensive play from scrimmage. He was flagged for pass interference and the catch was stricken from the stat books, but he was elated after the play.

"It felt good," Posey said. "A lot of hard work to get to this point. It was like a small celebration and it felt good to be one of the guys again.

Later in that first drive, which ended with a 5-yard touchdown run by Dennis Johnson, Posey caught a 15-yard pass from Case Keenum and was brought down ruggedly by a group of Cowboys' defenders.

"He got tackled a few times," head coach Gary Kubiak said. "I think he feels confident that he’s ready to go"

Posey also pulled in a 3-yard completion later in the first quarter, and his night was finished after about 14 plays from scrimmage.

Posey missed much of training camp because he was on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, but returned last week to practice with his teammates. Getting back into a game was sweet after putting in such hard work during the seven-month rehab. But he said his comeback isn't over after just one game.

"I’ll continue to progress," Posey said. "I know it’s a long year and I’ll get better and stronger and prove to them that I can contribute more and more."

Receptions help cement comeback for Texans’ DeVier Posey

ARLINGTON — DeVier Posey accelerated everything. His comeback. His immediate return. And his official 2013 debut.

When the Texans and third-string quarterback Case Keenum began their first possession against the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday at AT&T Stadium, Posey was expected to be on the sideline. But a 6-1, 211-pound wide receiver who tore his left Achilles tendon Jan. 13 during an AFC divisional-round playoff loss at New England was instead spread out along the Texans’ line. Soon, Posey was pulling in a 7-yard pass from Keenum on his first play, which occurred less than eight months after a major injury.

The catch was erased by a penalty. But Posey was back. He alternated with rookie tight end Ryan Griffin as Keenum’s favorite early target during the Texans’ 24-6 victory, finishing with two catches (on three balls thrown his way) for 18 yards, including 15 off a slant route that saw Posey exploit Dallas’ soft middle.

For a second-year wideout who surprised everyone but his himself by his quicker-than-expected return, Thursday’s debut was validation for everything Posey endured after his Achilles suddenly failed him.

“When you put the pads on and strap the helmet on, you’re all amped up, and you’re like, ‘Dang. I miss this. I miss this.’ It’s been probably one of the happiest days of 2013 for me, man,” said Posey, who played in 11 games during his rookie season, catching six passes for 87 yards.

Deepened corps

Posey’s return added another key name to an already-deep Texans receiving corps that is led by six-time Pro Bowler Andre Johnson and has been bolstered by rookie wideout DeAndre Hopkins, Keshawn Martin and Lestar Jean.

While starting quarterback Matt Schaub passed for 4,008 yards last season — the third year in four he’s broken 4,000 — the Texans’ offense slowed down and thinned out as the team’s 12-4 season fell apart. Schaub won’t be any more mobile this year, and his offense doesn’t regularly stretch and extend the field like some modern clubs. But a deeper, faster set of receivers could change the Texans’ attack just by giving Schaub multiple options in varied sets.

“That’s part of having a great team. You’ve got to be deep in every position,” Posey said. “And the year’s so long, and guys get nicked and bruised. I just feel like we’re deep enough in each position for the long haul, man.”

Hopkins has mid- and deep-range potential. Martin can be an occasional complement to Johnson, while Jean pulled in two catches for 32 yards and a touchdown on Thursday. But Posey could be a second-level difference this season, pairing with Hopkins to give the Texans two receivers to ease Johnson’s burden and a possible slot receiver to open the middle for running backs Arian Foster and Ben Tate.

“I feel good about DeVier. He got in 14 plays,” Texans coach Gary Kubiak said. “We wanted him to touch the ball. He got tackled. He’s confident, and he’s ready to go.”

Ahead of schedule

Posey was a calm pro after the game. He knew he’d defy expectations by devoting his offseason to his health and his team. The Texans will take whatever they can initially get from a wide receiver who wasn’t expected to be in uniform for the Sept. 9 opener at San Diego. But they also know a primed, confident Posey could be a difference-maker in 2013.

“That was really awesome,” quarterback T.J. Yates said. “Everybody’s been rooting for him. He’s come back so quick from that injury, and everybody’s seen
him all summer long, all offseason long really busting his tail every single day.”

Coming off a late-season 2012 Achilles' tear, Posey was among the Texans' Week 1 inactives. He'll stay that way until he regains "confidence and what he's doing in physical shape." Texans’ DeVier Posey on track for increased role

Second-year wide receiver DeVier Posey is on the verge of taking an increased role with the Texans.

Posey has continued to make progress since overcoming an Achilles tear and has impressed the Texans to the point they’re ready to include him in their offensive and special-teams plans.

“Posey’s very, very close to being himself again, watching him practice (Wednesday), so his role’s fixing to pick up for the team,” Texans coach Gary Kubiak said during a news conference at Reliant Stadium.

NFL Brothers With Local Roots Give Back

Julian and Devier Posey are brothers who play in the NFL. Julian is a cornerback for the Minnesota Vikings and Devier a wide receiver for the Houston Texans. The guys have come together to develop their own charitable organization focused right here in Cincinnati. The Posey brothers grew up in the Queen City and both played football for LaSalle High School. Julian went on to play for Ohio University and Devier at the Ohio State. Both Posey's play on Sunday's now, showing off the skills they learned here in Cincinnati. So, when the guys decided to start a charitable organization they wanted to focus on the place that started it all. "What better place than to give back to the place that gave so much to us," said Julian. Julian and Devier say they couldn't have gotten this far without help from their family and coaches. "The only way I know how to reciprocate that is to give back," said Devier. They are working with Mom Julie on Pocket Full of Poseys, an organization that emphasizes the importance of nutrition in athletics. "That's your fuel. So, you're either going to put unleaded, you're going to put regular or you're going to put premium. I would like to put premium. I may not be able to put premium in my car, but I'm going to put it in my body, " said Julian. This weekend the Poseys will hold their first charitable event, a celebrity waiter fundraiser at the Montgomery Inn boathouse. Guests will be served by NFL athletes. There will be silent auction items, and a question-and-answer session. Then, on Saturday, the Posey's get to demonstrate what their foundation will do. From 8:00 A.M. until 3:00 in the afternoon, they'll run a free football camp at Sawyer Point. Julian said, "It's really exciting. We are a little nervous. We are hoping that people come out and that people latch on to our message of good nutrition and physical fitness. And understand how fun the combination of those two things are."

Texans sent Posey and picks 82 (3rd), 152 (5th) and 229 (7th) to the Jets for the 70 pick, used for ASU WR Jaelen Strong.

Posey goes from tweeting congrats to Devin Smith to being his teammate an hour later.
