WR DeVier Posey (2017 Grey Cup Champion and MVP)

Posey's big play does in Lions
Receiver has only two catches, but one turned game

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- There are two ways to look at Ohio State receiver DeVier Posey's performance yesterday.

It could be argued that Penn State mostly kept him in check. Coming in with 22 catches over the previous three games, he had just two against the Nittany Lions.

But one of those was the backbreaker. His catch of an arcing Terrelle Pryor pass down the left sideline late in the third quarter silenced many of the 110,033 on hand. The 62-yard touchdown play increased Ohio State's lead to 17-7 on the way to a 24-7 victory.

"It was big because they were biting up, and we knew DeVier could run past a lot of guys," Pryor said.

Starting from the Ohio State 38-yard line, Posey ran straight past cornerback D'Anton Lynn.

"I just had to move the safety (Nick Sukay) a little bit to the right, and we just got it in there," Pryor said. "DeVier made a great catch. And the linemen had a real good block. I just stepped up in the pocket and just let 'er go."

It hung in the air, though. "It seemed like forever," Posey said, who caught it at the Penn State 15 and raced into the end zone.

OSU football: Posey has pocketful of catches
Receiver comfortable after last year's discomfort on bench

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

DeVier Posey has proved in the past four weeks that he's better at catching than sitting.

Posey, a sophomore receiver for Ohio State, has 24 catches in that time for four touchdowns, including a 62-yard TD catch last week in a 24-7 win at Penn State. Headed into a game Saturday against Iowa with a trip to the Rose Bowl on the line, Posey probably sits atop the Hawkeyes' pass-defense tip sheet.

"Whatever happens, I feel like I'll be ready," Posey said. "If it's double coverage, then I'll have to be ready for that. If it is normal single coverage, I'll have to beat that. If it's helping somebody else get open, I'm ready for that."

Just as long as he's playing, he's fine. Having to sit out most of last season was not his idea of a good time

"It was probably the second-hardest thing in my life as far as playing football," Posey said. (The hardest was not getting to play with the varsity his sophomore season at Cincinnati LaSalle.) "But I felt like I paid my dues and learned a lot last year."

Some recruiting analysts thought that Posey had a chance to excel as a freshman, much as A.J. Green at Georgia and Julio Jones at Alabama did.

The other two leapt onto the national scene, but Posey was stuck behind returning receivers Brian Robiskie and Brian Hartline. Plus, "I needed to learn a lot, and I needed to mature," he said.

"Going through last year, being able to be behind the Brians, and be able to watch guys like (former Ohio State receivers) Ted Ginn and Santonio Holmes on film, and being able to learn under (assistant) coach (Darrell) Hazell really took my game to another level. I really needed last year."

Posey no poseur as Buckeyes’ top receiver

COLUMBUS — DeVier Posey has the quick feet. He established that when he won the Division I 400-meter dash state title in 2008.

Good hands? He showed that in Ohio State’s first four games this season and with the 11 catches he had last year as a freshman.

But in OSU’s last six games, he has confirmed that he is what the Buckeyes’ coaches thought he was when they recruited him — a No. 1 receiver.

Posey, a 6-foot-3, 205-pound sophomore from Cincinnati LaSalle High School, has caught touchdown passes in five of the Buckeyes’ last six games. In the one he didn’t have a TD catch, he threw a 39-yard touchdown pass to Dane Sanzenbacher.

Posey has 45 catches for 672 yards and 7 touchdowns this season. He has a catch of 20 yards or more in each of the last six games and three for more than 50 yards.

With all the talk about the "modern classic" uniforms Ohio State will wear today at Michigan, it seems appropriate that receiver DeVier Posey cares a lot about how he looks on the field. That, plus some discussion of Facebook and his mother's love for the Tournament of Roses parade, makes for some interesting conversation:

Q: So what do you like to do in your free time?

A: I like going to the movies, I like to go to my house, relax, watch TV, get on the computer and play around with Facebook. When I'm not doing that, I just like to chill with a bunch of guys on the team. I don't really try to go out too much unless it's after the game, then I'll probably go out.

Q: That's funny - every time I ask players what they like to do, they all make a point of saying they don't go out much.

A: (Smiling) Yeah, we go out.

Q: Is Facebook a big time-eater?

A: I can spend a lot of time. I look up and like two hours went by on Facebook.

Q: Are you messaging people, or what?

A: Yeah, or just looking at pictures. The really cool thing I like on Facebook is I find people I went to kindergarten with. It's just an easier way to keep in contact with people because you can't call everyone, there's not enough hours in the day for that, especially with the schedule we have. So it's easier to get on and shoot somebody a message.

Kyle Robertson dispatch
DeVier Posey caught eight passes for 101 yards.

PASADENA, Calif. -- For a moment, the ball was lost in the lights, so Ohio State receiver DeVier Posey just put his hands out where he thought it was headed.

He saw it just in time. After twisting to catch Terrelle Pryor's pass behind Oregon cornerback Anthony Gildon in the left corner of the end zone, Posey rejoiced. His 17-yard touchdown catch secured a 26-17 Rose Bowl win for Ohio State.

"I can't believe I caught it," Posey said.

It came at the most critical time. The plan had been to score many more, Posey said, in response to the potent Ducks offense.

"We knew we would have to score because Oregon is a good team, they're high-powered, they have lot of good, young guys, and (quarterback Jeremiah) Masoli is really great," Posey said.

"It all started with our offensive line. And (Pryor), he came to play today."

Posey had eight catches for 101 yards.
