WR David Boston (First Team All-American, NFL All Pro)

He was a bubble player that I personally thought was going to make the team. He got released right before the season to bring on an O-lineman since the buccaneers were so beat up there. There was a fair amount of excitement when camp opened tempered by his injury history. At the end of preseason he made some catches just didn?t seem to really overly impress anybody. It seemed there were still some lingering health concerns and some thinking that he perhaps was not as explosive as he once was.

I am happy to see him back. I hope another year getting his health right will make him a solid player again.

His solid play was due to steroids.

Then you have the case of former Pro Bowl wide receiver David Boston, who is trying to complete an even longer road back. A training camp knee injury in 2004 essentially erased his two seasons in Miami , and he signed with the Buccaneers last year attempting to make a comeback. Undeniably talented ? he averaged 62 catches and 924 yards from 1999-2003 ? Boston has yet to regain his NFL foothold since that ?04 injury. Though he looked impressive at times for the Buccaneers last August, he did not find a spot on the regular-season roster. However, the team obviously still believes in Boston ?s potential, as was evident when they signed him again this past February.

"Boston is a guy who can run,? said Gruden. ?He?s a guy I?m really excited about who possesses speed. We?re always looking for guys who can run, and speed is a hard thing to coach and it?s a hard thing to acquire.?

It would be an inspiring story if Boston were to return from three essentially lost seasons to re-establish himself in the NFL. He has worked hard to make that return a reality, as has every player on the above list. That?s worth dwelling on, any time of the year.

good lord he is monstrous. i wish him the best though. he has always been very dedicated player but he made some mistakes along the way and had injuries. i remember hearing a while back that he went through a process of flushing out his small intestine to allow for extra absortion of nutrients and supplements.......thats just insane.

Dedicated? I guess if you consider using roids to signify dedication.

everybody makes mistakes. he has tested clean since then.

i signify being a standout WR at ohio state being dedicated, i signify going to the pro bowl with the cardinals being dedicated, i signify blowing out your knee twice and still playing being dedicated, i signify not being a starter after all of this for years yet still having the will to train and look like he does for the opportunity to still play to be dedicated.

Doing marijuana is a mistake.

Using steroids is cheating. And I'm sure he used them all the time (his body a few years ago tells you that). I'm sure you give Bonds as much leeway... :roll1:

Roids do not do all the work. They just enhance results. There would be a lot more people looking like that if that's all it took.

Actually it's even worse than that. I'm not sure what's the point for a WR to start looking like a tight end. Nobody would ever think Jerry Rice or Cris Carter two of the greatest were weightlifting mosters. Both of them worked out hard, but focused on things that actually mattered for WRs. Boston for some odd reason did not. I'm sure it's a coincidence his lower body injuries came about just as his upper extremity was ballooning grotesquely.

on this point i can agree. i think his knee problems were due to his weight considering he was around 260 at one time. he is back down around 220-230 now.

Boston has had some outstanding practices this offseason and dominated at times on Tuesday morning. Although he?s not as fast as he was during his prime, Boston is back. He?s getting good separation from defensive backs and making nice catches. Boston did, however, drop one pass during warm-ups.

It?s interesting to note that although the Bucs value Boston as a reliable backup behind WR Joey Galloway at the X (split end) spot, Boston has actually been cross-training a bit. He lined up as a Z opposite Galloway (X) on a few plays today. The Bucs like the idea of having both Galloway and Boston on the field at the same time. Those two are the Bucs? fastest receivers.

Well, the heated Tibor based discussion from 2 months ago aside, I don't really know how I feel about Boston trying. I hate to say it but I think he's done so much damage to his body that he's constantly injured. San Diego picked him up a couple years ago and I was really excited about it, but a few weeks into the season and he was out, then he came back and got injured again. It also felt like he didn't want to be there, even though we were paying him well and we had a lot of talent around him. Great talent when he wants to be...
