WR David Boston (First Team All-American, NFL All Pro)

"I'm just thankful for another opportunity," said Boston, who was among Tampa Bay's final cuts last season, when injuries along the offensive line left him caught in a numbers game. "These guys have stuck with me, and I'm really thankful to the organization. I knew when they released me they were still interested."

Boston, 28, likes his chances to stick this time around. He is another year removed from knee surgery and a four-game NFL suspension for steroid use that marred his disastrous stint with the Dolphins.

"He was one of the elite receivers in all of football a few years ago," Gruden said. "I don't even think anyone knows he's around. That's what I tell him every day - that people have forgotten about you."

Quarles Sits In On Bucs' Practice | Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Pewter Report

BOSTON CATCHING ON WITH OFFENSE

While some players seemed a step slower with the addition of pads in Sunday morning?s practice, wide receiver David Boston continued his impressive performance in training camp. Boston made a couple of nice catches during the morning practice and is making a strong case for a spot in the receiving corps.

With Joey Galloway seemingly the only wide receiver with a secure spot in the offense, Boston is battling with Michael Clayton, Maurice Stovall and Ike Hilliard for playing time. One person who has been impressed with what Boston has done so far in training camp is Gruden.

?He did look pretty good,? Gruden said. ?He was a superstar in this league when healthy. I?m not going to say he?s back yet, but if today and yesterday and the day before and the last three months are any indication, he?s closing in on coming back and making a name for himself again.?

Final chance for WR Boston
Veteran viewing his latest opportunity with Bucs as his last
By ROGER MOONEY
[email protected]

LAKE BUENA VISTA --It's David Boston and a Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback hooked up one-on-one during a recent morning practice, and it's no contest, really. Boston moves ahead by one step then two and easily cradles the deep pass thrown by Jeff Garcia.

It's the type of completion Bucs coach Jon Gruden craves and one the Bucs offense needs if it is to be successful this season. The team can only stretch the defense so far with Joey Galloway. It can use another burner.

Enter David Boston.

"He was a superstar in this league when healthy," Gruden said.

Gruden could have also added "when eligible."

He's beating cornerbacks on deep patterns, getting open on crossing patterns and grabbing everything in sight.

"He's humming," Gruden said. "If the last three months are any indication, he's closing in on making a comeback."

Glory gone, a quiet comeback
Receiver David Boston is taking a second shot at resurrecting his career with the Bucs.

"Last year, he didn't look like the David Boston that everybody remembers from his years at Ohio State and his first couple years in the league," Barber said. "He couldn't run. He wasn't explosive. But I noticed in the offseason that he was showing it again, and he's showing it now. Barring anything unforeseen, I can't imagine him not exploding back."

Hard to believe he's not even 29 yet.
I remember the article about how big he was when he was in San Diego, and all of the mystery about all of the stuff that he was taking to be 260 pounds and still keep his speed. One person predicted that Boston's body would give out, and he probably wouldn't live past 29. Looks like the first part was semi-true. Hopefully he's righted the ship enough that the second part doesn't come true.

In 2001 Boston was uncoverable. Absolute beast. Had he kept his "training" in check at that point we could be talking about the best professional Buckeye receiver ever. Alas, it was not to be. Good for him getting things straightened out. I hope he and Galloway team up for a monster season.

The year he was in SD he was out a LOT due to inury, I think his ankle was messed up because he was off and on every week. I was really happy to get him but alas, he didn't work out too well. Oh well, Matt Wilhelm is starting for us this year in place of Donnie Edwards so we got that going for us :)

Judging from that recent picture, Boston looks like he "slimmed" down some. The last time I saw him was last year and he was hugggggge. Has anybody ever met him and what is he like. I've always felt from the outside looking in that Boston was a strange bird

Boston Trying To Grab Roster Spot

LAKE BUENA VISTA - David Boston used to be known as an elite NFL receiver. He once was a playmaker and a franchise player.

It has been two years, however, since Boston last played in the league. He has battled injuries since 2002 and has become an afterthought among most general managers and fans.

A former Pro Bowl receiver, Boston now finds himself battling to make Tampa Bay's roster in what could be his last chance of making an NFL squad.

"A lot of people have forgotten that I even play anymore," Boston said.

Wednesday's Quotes from Bucs Camp
Quotes after Wednesday morning's practice session from Tampa Bay Buccaneers training camp:

HEAD COACH JON GRUDEN

Is WR David Boston back to where he was before his knee injury two years ago?)
I think he's getting closer. Our depth chart is changing daily. David Boston is in the mix, not only to make the team but to start. He's having a great camp. He hasn't missed a day. I really like what we see from him.
He's 234 pounds, he's running all the routes at all the positions and he hasn't backed down at any position.

(The impact of having a player like Boston on the field)
Joey Galloway's a very good player. We'd like the flanker position (opposite Galloway) to be stellar for us. Stellar. Boston will get a look at flanker against New England. His versatility is allowing us to do that.
Maurice Stovall started off fast. He's had some sore legs the last few days but I'd like to see him pick it up.
Ike Hilliard's been solid and Michael Clayton has picked it up here the last few days.
It's been competitive and we're excited about that.

This is like deja vu, contrary to what the posted stories say re: Boston last year, the reports/stories read nearly identical as last year (go back 1-2 pages in the thread) when Boston was cut after camp. I hope the results are better this time.
