Boise State's dependable wide receiver duo of Austin Pettis and Titus Young will remain intact for the Senior Bowl, joining San Diego State's VIncent Brown, Ohio State's Dane Sanzenbacher, East Carolina's Dwayne Harris and Nebraska's Niles Paul. They could be upstaged by the tight ends. Wisconsin's Lance Kendricks and Marshall's Lee Smith are good ones. So is Nebraska's Mike McNeill, who can also be effective as a wideout or slot receiver.​

WR Dane Sanzenbacher, Ohio State: Sanzenbacher was the best route runner at the Senior Bowl, despite the fact he wasn?t even in Mobile until Day 2. His footwork was sharp and consistently drew raves from the Bengals receiving coach, who made it a point to tell him that he had excellent feet. The former Buckeye also took the perfect angle as he exited each break and this made him a frequent target of his North Squad quarterbacks in 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills. While there are bigger, faster and better runners at the receiver position, Sanzenbacher?s routes, body control and hands illustrate the sometimes overlooked point that the most important part of playing receiver is to consistently be where the quarterback expects.

Buckeye joins party

Ohio State wide receiver Dane Sanzenbacher was a late arrival, showing up only after several NFL teams called for his Senior Bowl inclusion. A shifty, 5-11 slot receiver who amassed 948 receiving yards in his senior season, Sanzenbacher is finding inspiration from a familiar face: Wes Welker.

?He?s definitely one of my biggest allies in this process,? Sanzenbacher said of Welker. ?Because the more you can get compared to a guy that good, that successful in the league, it helps me. I?ve never really specifically tried to model my game after him or anything like that, but I definitely respect what he does.?

The oft-overlooked receiver does appreciate a potential fit with the Pats.

?The thing that sticks out with them is they?ve had guys who are maybe a little undersized,? Sanzenbacher said, ?and always get the job done and being successful at it.?

Bucks look to stand out in Senior Bowl

The Senior Bowl, held in Mobile, Ala., is an opportunity for senior football players to showcase their talents in front of pro scouts and coaches.

And Former Ohio State football players Ross Homan and Dane Sanzenbacher were invited to the field.

Homan and Sanzenbacher understand the importance of the opportunity.

"The best players in the nation are out here, competing and trying to showcase their skills," Homan said.

Being at your best and separating yourself from the rest is something Homan said is crucial in a game like this.

"It's very important. You're always being evaluated every time you step on the field," Homan said. "It's a huge job interview; that's the way I look at it."

Sanzenbacher agreed.

"It's an opportunity for you to show your talents and stand out from everybody else," he said.

Since the Sugar Bowl, Homan and Sanzenbacher have been training for the NFL draft process. Both were recently invited to the NFL Combine, and both said they plan to attend.

Live from the Senior Bowl: I have an awkward conversation with Ohio St. WR Dane Sanzenbacher

One of the more interesting players this week at the Senior Bowl was Ohio State WR Dane Sanzenbacher. The tough, hard-nosed slot receiver had 55 catches for 948 yards with 11 touchdowns this season, yet didn?t earn an invite to Mobile.

He wound up flying down a day late, as teams were upset he wasn?t originally invited. A bunch of clubs like him, including the Patriots. So, when I went to talk to him yesterday, I had a few topics I wanted to hit? including one obvious and awkward one.

Sanzenbacher shares several characteristics of another player we all know well ? Wes Welker. He?s not big, he?s a good worker, got great hands and he?s, well, white. We can say that, right? He?s white. That?s led him to be compared to Welker at every step along the way.

I wanted to know what he thought of that, and Sanzenbacher started laughing as soon as I started asking. Shoot, I started laughing, too. What resulted was, well, pure gold. Check out our conversation:

Me: I?m sure you get this a lot, but the Welker comparison. I can?t help but notice that you?re, um, white? (which I promise was the start to a longer, more drawn-out question that would?ve made sense)

Sanzenbacher: (Already laughing) ?Haha. I can?t help but notice that you?re white and small, not a special teams guy, a kicker. Right??

Me: Oh, I know. It?s ridiculous. But you can?t avoid the Welker stuff?

Sanzenbacher: ?Oh, I get that all the time. But he?s definitely one of my biggest allies in this process. Because the more you can get compared to a guy that?s that good, that successful, in the league it helps me. I?ve never really specifically tried to model my game after him or anything like that, but I definitely respect what he does.?

Me: Do you follow a team like the Patriots?

Sanzenbacher: ?Not religiously, but obviously, they?re on a national stage enough I can?t help but know what?s going on. They?ve had enough success where you always want to watch the guys that are successful. The thing that sticks out with them is they?ve had guys who are maybe a little undersized ? I mean, it?s been one of the biggest stories in the NFL this year. Tom Brady working with guys that are maybe undersized and always get the job done and being successful at it.?

Another reporter walks up: (Sarcastic) Who do you most get compared to? Welker? Ed McCaffrey?

Sanzenbacher: ?Wes Welker, most often. Hey, it is what it is. It comes with the white, slot receiver territory.?

I was wondering why it took three days before somebody just came out and asked him about it.

Here's, lets 'FIFY' up some of the previous comments now that the cats out of the bag.

Tuesday Practice Notes: Late fill in. Ran good routes and caught the ball well. Was able to separate from opponents and very good catching the underneath routes. No speed whatsoever. Is white.

Wednesday Practice Notes: Tremendous route runner with amazing hands. Looks like a good slot receiver for an NFL team, since that's where the white guys play.

Only surprised he wasn't invited from the get go, not surprised that he will show them he's the real deal. It's as I said early, he's the late addition to the Ted Ginn Sr Bus Tour who proves to so many doubters that he "has a little nasty in him". Dane has flown under the radar most of his career, this time they have to notice him as the rules of engagement for the Senior Bowl pit players more one on one. When Dane beats a 5 star All American DB on a crossing route and catches a laser from one of these premier QBs, then everyone will be able to see the nasty in him. NFL worthy - hell yes.

He's a Buckeye through and through!

Receivers

Lance Kendricks, Wisconsin - Not as big or talented as hoped, there is only room for so many H-back types.

Mike McNeill, Nebraska - Same as Kendricks but might be able to play traditional fullback because of blocking.

Lee Smith, Marshall - Old school tight end. Has the size and talent to go from late pick to starter as a rookie like Kevin Boss.

Vincent Brown, San Diego State - Nobody helped their stock more this week, his stock is up multiple rounds.

Dwayne Harris, East Carolina - Was able to flash his talents this week, but a few nice grabs don't make up for drops.

Niles Paul, Nebraska - Good to see away from Nebraska's run-first offense. Still needs polish but a very willing prospect.

Austin Pettis, Boise State - Big body, eats smaller corners and zones, but struggles with size in his face.

Dane Sanzenbacher, Ohio State - Sure hands and toughness make him a solid addition to any team.

Titus Young, Boise State - A killer in space. Mike Mayock loves the kid and he has been one of the two best WRs in Mobile.
