WR Dane Sanzenbacher (Official Thread)

Dane in the Rotation

Tressel talks about Dane and Ray in today's Press conference. It seems we'll be seeing him on Saturday, the Ray and Dane combination will be fun to watch this weekend.

Transcript From Coach Tressel Weekly Press Conference - Ohio State Buckeyes Official Athletics Site - OhioStateBuckeyes.com

REPORTER: You have Dane Sanzenbacher listed in your two deep, does that mean he's back or is Ray Small, your third receiver, will they share that responsibility? COACH TRESSEL: We'll probably try to have a rotation, if we're with two wides, it will be the Brians (Hartline and Robiskie) if we'll be three wides, we'll have Brian, Brian, Ray, or Brian, Dane, Ray, so that we can give those two Brians a rest every once in a while, they've been going a lot of snaps and they play fast and physical, so it gives us more of an ability to rotate, and then we still have an opportunity to get some kids in. The neat thing about guys like Devon Torrence and things like that is they're really helping out in the special teams so they're continuing to get some experience, but getting Dane back is a good thing, because Dane's going to be good, he's going to be a good player, and he gives you a little threat on the field.

Sanzenbacher to be in OSU lineup for Minnesota

By MATT MARKEY
BLADE SPORTS WRITER

COLUMBUS - Ohio State freshman receiver Dane Sanzenbacher from Toledo's Central Catholic High School should be back in the Buckeyes' lineup for Saturday night's game at Minnesota, Ohio State coach Jim Tressel said yesterday. Sanzenbacher, who had moved into a role with the starters prior to the beginning of the season, was injured in the Buckeyes' 33-14 win at Washington on Sept. 15.

Dane's Reception at Minny

Kudos to all the WRs this past weekend. We threw successfuly to TE's, WR's and RB's. I was hoping to see more long balls thrown to Dane and Ray and maybe less to the TE's but whatever keeps the ball moving forward. Ray had a great game and his speed is definitely going to help us against Purdue this week.

Although one reception by Dane isn't much to talk about, it was a key firstdown reception that setup the first TD run by Beanie. It seems Dane's blocking has improved also, he blocked well on another run by Ray. He made a key block previously againt Washington when Saine ran for 30 plus yards. This team is doing so well that it's hard to imagine that this is a very young team making some pretty big plays.

Injury follow-up? When Dane had that undisclosed injury (concussion) during the Washington game, I still haven't quite figured out what, where and when it happened. I was wondering if anyone might have some insight on that. In watching the Minny game, the closeup camera found Dane on the sideline once just after the reception he made in the first qtr and again later in the game with his hat off sitting on the bench (TB walking in front of him). Is he 100 percent? On both occasions I saw something in his eye movement that looked off. Darn HD images - too much detail I guess it's just over-reacting. Did anyone see this?

Dane Sighting

I didn't see Dane in the game last night, or catch a pass at least.

I was a little disappointed, at least he caught one last week against Minny. He was in the game but nothing was thrown his way. IMO, we're throwing too many deep balls and missing opportunities elsewhere. Dane is shown standing in the endzone next to Hartline in the Blade article link so he ran that route were the two receivers split. Hartline got the toss, maybe he was a better target on that play (he was being covered by a LB). I also heard them say Taurian Washington's name, but nothing thrown his way either. If some of those deep balls were thrown to the freshmen instead (on sub routes), the score might have been different. I argued this elsewhere here only to hear that the freshmen "don't know the plays as well" etc. I don't think that's the case, come on they're smart kids who have made it into the two deep. They don't give those positions to dumb players with no ability. Anyway, my thought was to find these guys, maybe even design a play with them as a target because Robo and Hartline are getting a lot of action. If it were a confidence thing or something like big game plays need to be made by the primary receivers, then JT needs to revisit his game plan. Too many unproductive long balls for me. Try using all the WRs in a more balanced attack. Just my take on it, but the game plan worked well enough yesterday.

I'm happy with the win, maybe JT will open it up more against Kent next week. It's good to see Brandon Saine in their too, he always seems a step away from breaking one long. I think I like all the Freshman this year. It bodes well for future seasons.

BuckeyeXtra - The Columbus Dispatch : Heacock: Buckeyes beware

Several young receivers have emerged this season, including sophomore Ray Small and freshmen Dane Sanzenbacher and Taurian Washington.
That has not left much playing time for veterans Devon Lyons or Albert Dukes. Both were nursing minor injuries as the season began, which further hurt their status.
"It's a little tough this year, because we have some good younger guys that came in," receiver Brian Hartline said. "It's no knock on (Dukes and Lyons), but when Taurian and Dane and some other guys come in, (there's) more competition. It's what you expect when you come to Ohio State, so things happen sometimes."

Hopefully we'll see a few TDs by these guys on Saturday. Me thinks, it will be a good day offensively.

I think we need to worry a little less about the freshman. Dane is fine. The team is great, and the offense is throwing to it's best targets. Dane isn't getting as many touches because Ray Small is back and Ray has become a huge threat.

I agree - and more touches will all come in time - just like last year when the Brians and Ray got a few good touches and Gonzo and Teddy were the leaders, or with Satonio the year before, etc., etc.

Remember there's only 1 ball. Thats the price you pay when you have so many weapons!

Big Ten Network-stats

Dane had two receptions on Saturday among 9 other receivers. Whatever it takes to move the chains. We have more than one choice in getting the chains moving these days and so many ways of putting points on the board. I like the way we have spread it around but I'm at a loss for exactly why. Unless it's by design in order to give TB a chance to work on his timing and field vision with a multitude of receivers all with different size, speed, abilities, etc. JT may be trying to find the best combinations and trying not to be too limited with his receivers. I'd say his plan was a success with 10 catching passes in this game.

Brandon Saine is a new dimension to the arsenal. I really hope we see more of him as a receiver. Dane is sometimes listed as a flanker and sometimes as slot receiver. I just think that he must still be part of the wide receiver "experiment" as JT tries to find ways to use him and others best. Dane's PT is invaluable as he matures with this young team. Whatever they're doing out there keep doing it. The total receiving offense was 263 yards with JT emptying the benches on this one.

DANE'S DAY: Ohio State freshman wide receiver Dane Sanzenbacher from Central Catholic had two receptions for 20 yards, giving him eight catches for 57 yards in six games.

Game day thoughts

Sorry, I'm a little slow with the post. I was happy to see Dane in the game but why did it take so long? The game seemed under control up until the int and fumble that is. He and Saine were missed. Then Dane appears with a first down possession catch for 9 yards. Then boom and another 9 yard catch. That's it, but they were clutch catches that kept the drives alive. Why not do a liitle more of that throughout the game. More ball control. Does anyone wonder why we don't throw more short passes, slants, and other short gainers? I think TB likes the long ball because he's got some great receivers in Hartline and Robo. I also think that TB likes to show off that arm and it is spectacular when he connects with his favorite receivers. Those short passes don't make the replays on ESPN but they get the job done and help win games.

Did they have Ray covered today too, along with Dane and Saine? They're freshman I know I know, one fucking ball and that crap. He's earning his stripes, learning the plays, give him time. Well, just maybe the time has come and we don't need to wait until he's a Sophomore. He caught both short passes last week, both last week. Hey, do you think maybe if TB threw a few long balls to him he might catch them too? Then he might be say 4 for 4 and possibly add another TD. I have no doubt he would.

So go ahead and pick this apart, but this is why it a bitter sweet day for me. We win, the defense comes through once again to bail out an offense that could be that much better if we used the weapons we have.

Rant over, I said it. Let's see what we do with Penn State next week.
