WR Corey Smith (Official Thread)

Could be just the set up he needs to push himeself over the top. Bunch of young guns take part in the most prolific offense in tOSU history and you were absent? Hmmmm. Let's see what he's got now w/ that motivation.

This WR room is absolutely loaded and based on raw talent alone Corey has the tools to be near the top. Let's see if he is up to the challenge.

Played Special-teams against Oklahoma with a pretty bad hand. Props to him!
Though Meyer didn't specify the injury to Smith's right hand, he did say Smith is scheduled to have surgery on Sunday.

Then Smith is going to have a cast put back on, recover during Ohio State's bye week and then play again when the Buckeyes return to action against Rutgers the following week.

"That was my decision," Meyer said. "We talked about it before the game. Play him, because he's got good hands."

The obvious follow up: "He can catch?"

Meyer: "Yeah."

Though Smith hasn't been much of a factor in Ohio State's passing game -- even with two uninjured hands -- he's been a constant piece of the Buckeyes plan because of his playmaking ability on special teams.

Alright. I need a solid update on this cat.

I know there are those who will be quick to point out his dropped passes, "the fumble", etc but there is NO doubt he has legit WR skills.

And I think the lack of a great passing attack ranks in order of relevance: WR group not pulling their weight first and then tied for second is JT off on timing, underthrowing, etc and play calling. Improvement in JT and play calling will help no doubt. But we need someone other than TD Brown and the occasional cameo (ala DeSoto last week) and Curtis. We need more.

So this brings me back to Corey. If this dude along with KJ Hill could get healthy and get in a rhythm with JT on the back half of the year it could literally be the difference in a NC in my opinion.

I think Corey and KJ are that talented and I think getting them going would have a major impact.

Live Updates from the Oct. 27 Urban Meyer Call-In Show
Urban Meyer Updates

+ The health on the team is good. "We're banged up a little bit." Dante Booker is getting close to ready, but they aren't going to force that one. Corey Smith has been cleared to play, but they'll limit him a little bit. He'll be wearing a cast.

Ohio State's deep threat? Corey Smith expected to return to practice Tuesday
There has been some concern with Ohio State's production at wide receiver. Meyer said Monday that outside of Noah Brown, none of the other wideouts have done a good enough job separating themselves.
.
.
.
But when asked what kind of lift Smith could provide, Meyer said two words that would make any Ohio State fan's ears perk up: "Deep threat."

So the WR with the cast on his hand and a 12.7 ypc for his career is our best hope for a big play deep threat?
