Draddy semifinalists
The National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame announced on Wednesday, Oct. 1, the semifinalists for its Draddy Trophy, presented annually to smart football players who can play the game and are also scions of their community. WR Brian Robiskie was among the semifinalists ? 164 of them. It's not that exclusive of a club, even among residents of Ohio.
The other semifinalists included Ohio's Michael Brown, Brad Samsa of Youngstown State, Dayton's Bart Bergfeld, Joel Sienicki of Bluffton, Mount Union's Greg Micheli, Zach Brumfield of Wittenberg and James Dingus of Ohio Dominican.
Finalists will be announced Oct. 29.

Robiskie keeps toughing it out

MADISON, Wis. -- Having opted to return for his senior season, Ohio State receiver Brian Robiskie knew there would be pro scouts critiquing his every move. After all, his father, Terry, is a veteran receivers coach in the NFL.
But Brian said the only thing on his mind going into the game last night against Wisconsin was "doing what I can to help this team win games."
Still, eyes are on him for other reasons. Because of arthroscopic knee surgery that kept Robiskie out of spring drills and a shoulder injury that slowed him in preseason camp, he had been off to a tepid start until an eight-catch, two-touchdown game Sept. 27 against Minnesota. Last night, he had a modest two catches for 10 yards.
If the scouts have been paying attention, they have noticed something else about Robiskie this season, Ohio State receivers coach Darrell Hazell said.

Whatever good things happen to this team for the remainder of the 2008 season should go right back to Robo. That fumble recovery on the final drive is, to me, the biggest play PERIOD so far this season. We lose that ball, and all the dreams go out the window. 12-1 record, outright Big-Ten Champions, BCS Bowl Game are pipedreams.

Kudo's to Robo for, in his words, simply "being in the right place at the right time." Isn't it amazing in the history of sports how many GREAT players seem to put themselves in that very same "right" position? Great job, Robo!!!!!

The lowdown: The Academic All-American was recently named one of 164 national semifinalists for the Draddy Award, known as the academic Heisman. The Chagrin Falls grad is also moving up OSU's all-time receiving list, currently in 11th place but just two catches away from taking possession of ninth. How does he achieve his success on the field and off? By staying away from video games. Best concert I've been to: "Lupe Fiasco at the Newport." (The Grammy-winning Chicago-based rapper performed near OSU's campus in March.)
Concert I'd most like to see now: "A Kanye West or Jay-Z concert somewhere."
Favorite video game: "I don't play video games. No time." (I thought everyone on this team played video games.) "Except me."
Favorite Web site: "ESPN.com. Just all sports."
Favorite NFL team and why: "Atlanta Falcons. It was the Dolphins last year, and a couple of years ago it was the Browns, before that it was the Redskins." (He's talking about whichever team currently employs his father, Terry, as a coach.) "Every year my dad sends me some T-shirts, so I'm good to go every year."

OSU photoScheduled to complete his college education in less than four years, Brian Robiskie would like to get a graduate degree --- after taking a shot at the NFL.
COLUMBUS -- Though Ohio State is out of the national title race and Beanie Wells is out of the Heisman race, senior receiver Brian Robiskie could bring some hardware to Columbus. The Chagrin Falls grad on Wednesday was named one of 15 finalists for the Draddy Award, often referred to as the Academic Heisman. Mount Union quarterback Greg Micheli was also named a finalist, and each finalist was awarded an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship. The Draddy Award comes with another $7,000 scholarship and a bronze trophy, with the winner to be named on Dec. 9 in New York.
An first-team Academic All-American who has been honored for his classwork in the past, Robiskie again credited his parents, former Browns coach Terry Robiskie and Cynthia Robiskie. His mom in particular always told her sons if they didn't perform in the classroom, she would take football away.
"The first quarter I got here, it was difficult because everything was new," Robiskie said. "But I felt a lot of it was easier for me than a lot of other kids. That goes back to my parents. My mom always threatened to sit me from playing football if my grades weren't good enough. For me to have those fundamentals growing up, it was easier.

"I grew up in a household that stressed education and stressed academics. I know both of them are proud."

Robiskie for Heisman?

Ohio State receiver Brian Robiskie is one of 15 finalists for the Draddy Trophy, also called the ?Academic Heisman,? the National Football Foundation announced today.
OSU could become the first school to have three Draddy winners, which honors senior players who have at least a 3.2 grade-point average plus "outstanding football ability", and who have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship.
Quarterback Bob Hoying won in 1995, and quarterback Craig Krenzel in 2003. Two other schools have won two Draddys: Tennessee (Peyton Manning and Michael Munoz) and Florida (Brad Culpepper and Danny Wuerffel), but neither has a finalist this year.
Robiskie and the other finalists were chosen out of 164 semifinalists. The winner will be announced at an awards dinner Dec. 9 in New York. All finalists receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship, and the winner gets a $25,000
