World War II trivia game.

One more before "nighty night"...:biggrin:

After breaking the Japanese codes, we still didn't know what their next move was going to be...Though we could read Japanese communications, they still used code words for specific places. We did not know what places the code words were refering to...

What deceptive transmission did the U.S. use to determine that Midway was Japan's next target? In other words, how did we know, for sure, that Japan had its eyes on Midway and therefore allowed us to have our carriers waiting in ambush?

Midway's fresh water system was on the fritz. Then we intercepted a transfer back from the Japs talking amongst themselves, and mentioned the code specific to Midway. :biggrin:


In the battle of Coral Sea, we lost 1 carrier, and had another badly damaged. Name these 2 carriers.

Correct. We overheard the Japanese saying they would need to bring water...

Total guess: The Yorktown and Saratoga?

(I'm not even sure if the Saratoga was a carrier, but for some reason that's the name that popped in my head. :biggrin: )

Another before I head to the Reds game. What was the type of plane used to shot down Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto plane as he headed on surprise inspections in the northern Solomon Islands in 1943?



By the way, the Claude was used before the AM2 Zero and was phased out of combat early in the war as it still had fixed landing gear. The AM3 was a AM2 with rounded wingtips and the AM5 Zeke came in late 43 early 44 and had a little more armour on it as the AM2 Zero was basically a flying gas can.

I would guess a P-51 Mustang-they were introduced around that time of the war, but I'm really not sure.

OK, let me try one. An Ohio State alum was a key figure in cracking Japanese codes before and during the war. Who was she?

Bonus points. Ohio State alumni have been on the cover of Time Magazine 14 times (if you count twice for Roy Lichtenstein's art). Who was the only multiple coverboy/covergirl and how many times? The fact that it's a WWII thread should give you a hint.

The lady was Agnes Meyer Driscoll-had to go to wikipedia for that one. As far as multiple cover people- Curtis LeMay?
