It was time. Chryst had some highlights here to be sure (6-1 bowl record, beating Miami in the Orange Bowl, Turnover Chain My Fucking Ass, etc. etc.) but the program has been steadily backsliding for three years. The trademarks of the program over the last 30 years – strong offensive line and running game, disciplined football, etc. – have evaporated. To wit, they had two (2) rushing yards last week against Illinois. Of more concern to me was that the team seemed to take after its coach's personality and there was a startling lack of energy and fire on both sides of the ball. Chryst decided to cast his fate with Graham Mertz, and that just hasn't worked out.
Off the field, it wasn't much better. Chryst was somewhat vocal about not really enjoying the recruiting part of the job (somewhat important) and was not a fan of the NIL stuff as it came down the pike. Under his tenure, the UW Athletic Department also disbanded the Mendota Gridiron Club – a popular boosters club – and stopped holding the annual spring game. Those decisions are tolerable when you are winning, but when things start going south like they have other the last 3 years and you don't have a reservoir of goodwill to fall back on...it gets dicey.
I've seen a lot of allusions made to Nebraska firing Pelini, but with Wisconsin, the Big Ten, and really college football entering a new era, I think it was the only choice. Adding USC and UCLA and possibly disbanding divisions will not make things any easier. You're either all in or you're not.
As far as the future, I could see him taking an OC job somewhere if he wants to stay in coaching but move out of the spotlight a bit. Jim Leonhard now has half a season to prove his mettle as a HC, but my opinion is he'll get the interim tag removed from his title sooner rather than later. If not, the obvious choice is Lance Leipold, who is a Wisconsin native and coached at Division III UW-Whitewater before making the jump to DI.
The overall record is going to look fine because it's buoyed by the first few years of his tenure. The fact is that they've inflated their record against a historically terrible division (which bears out in the CCG) and have lost to basically anyone with a pulse over the last 3 years, often times in embarrassing fashion. Here are their wins since 2020:I support the fan base wanting change, but I just can't see how this deserves an in-season termination at any University, let alone Wisconsin.

How long before Urban Meyers name is brought up
Urban is not going anywhere where he can't control the situation like he could at Ohio State and where he can't recruit like he did at Ohio State. 'Bama, USC, ND, and Michigan are the only places I see him considering.
I hear you. What I’m thinking is that he got what ever funds he needed from Gene Smith. He had control of the hiring/firing of staff, something ND doesn’t allow their coaches. He didn’t have the media control that Woody was afforded, but that was a different world.I'll have to check my notes, but I don't think his ability to control the situation at Ohio State was quite what he thought it was.

I honestly think some mid-major will hire Chryst and be very happy with the results.
And then Narduzzi back to the B1G where he swears he can win.So, Pitt?
