Will you pull for Notre Dame or Michigan?

Myself, I will pull for the domers, but without much zeal.

I will also be pulling for Nebraska to pull off the upset of the Trojans.

This question is improperly phrased, but I will root against Michigan less. Regardless, any weekend in which two teams from the group of USC, ND, UM, and kNU WILL lose is a good weekend. I'll be amused if the 'Canes go down again too.

So let me get this straight, Ohio State's success is slightly dependent on scUM? This seems to be the argument you and everyone else uttering the blasphemy of "Go Flu". Personally, I think OSU is a quality enough program that it controls its own destiny. We don't need the help of any program, especially from gutter slime up north.
OK, put OSU in the Big East. Where's the challenge? Where are the resources and facilities... academic and athletic... in that league?

Is that what you want? Something OSU can dominate in everyway? Why not just go independent, schedule Army, Navy and Air Force, Oregon, Vanderbilt, SMU?

Ohio State's success, academic and athletic, is enhanced because it is in competition with, and compared to, other excellent institutions.

What would the Pac 12 be without USC and UCLA? What would the ACC be without Miami and FSU? What would the Big 12 be like without Oklahoma - Texas?

Do you want to beat Michigan or simply spite them at your own expense?

Is this what I was arguing? No. Stating the absurd to bolster your own argument adds nothing to this discussion.

The issue is not schedule. Look what I said about the Big10, I want every team to win except scUM. I want PSU, Iowa, Wisconsin, and the other teams to be dominant, national powerhouses. I want scUM to fall from this category. Will never happen, but when we talk about who to cheer for, we are talking about what we want. Which of course raises another important factor, who you or I cheer for tomorrow will have zero impact on the actual game.

Not included in my comments, but since you raise scheduling, is the fact that I like when we schedule series like Texas and what we have scheduled in the future with Miami, USC, and Oklahoma. I hate the fact that next year our schedule includes Kent State, Akron, and Youngstown State.

Ohio State's success, academic and athletic is enhanced because it is in competition with and compared to other excellent institutions.

No, our success is a result of the quality people (coaches, athletes, professors, students) who comprise the Ohio State University.

Unfair option. Ohio State can be a great, very successful program regardless of scUM's fortunes. In fact, if we extend your argument far enough we really should hope that scUM defeats us soon because their credibility as an equal power may be in jeopardy, which will hurt us in the long run.

I loathe both programs, but every decision I make deciding which team I root for is based on what would be better fot tOSU.

I firmly believe it's better for tOSU if scUM beats the Domers.

I also think it's best for tOSU if Nebraska, Florida, and LSU win this weekend.

I don't think it's absurd to point out that OSU repuation, academic and Athletic is boosted by the company it keeps. Fight with history all you want, but Michigan has a fine reputation in both categories. What is less well known is that the academic resources of the Big Ten are shared. It's a huge incentive in faculty recruitment, research grants and bringing in strong grad and undergrad students. Ohio State benefits not one iota from Notre Dame's academic strengths. Further, the higher any Big 10 team is ranked, the more lucrative their bowl bid and the more money generated for the programs of ALL Big 10 schools. The higher Notre Dame is ranked, the more lucrative their bowl game the more money they take in and share with exactly no one. And did you notice who wore the home jerseys in the Fiesta Bowl and which team walked out with the biggest check?

OK. I guess we could end the season playing Penn State or Iowa... Make Michigan homecoming... Man, what did they do to you? Run off with your girlfriend? Step on your blue suede shoes?

Who said this, Barry Goldwater? OSU does not live in a vacuum. Without the Big 10 we could be Miami or Ohio U. The conference has grown in athletic and academic status because of its total strength. Ohio State has benefitted, is benefitting, will benefit from the Big 10.

By extension of your argument The Game will remain The Game despite the collapse of Michigan... There's a reason why Indiana is not The Game... and I have no interest in a major rivalry that becomes one sided... like the 90s...and maybe that's the source of our differing opinions. If I had been a student at OSU during the 90s the Michigan game would be much more difficult to put into perspective.

Way, way too much thought put into this topic.

I understand your point about a strong scUm program helping OSU by extension, but you do make your argument a bit absurd by taking it so far. scUM has 100+ years of football success (some would say more than any other program), and there's literally nothing they could do over the next 5-10 years that could drop them to the level of an Indiana. They are our primary and generally most-hated rival, and for some of us Buckeye fans that means we root against them in all situations and theoretically even hope for the complete implosion and eventual abolition of their football program and even their university and their state. So go ahead and play your "rivalry of respect" game--but realize that I and many other Buckeye fans simply don't give a damn about the whole state of Michigan.

And really, does anybody honestly think rooting either way for this game makes any difference in its outcome?
