Will Boeckman be Benched?

jlb1705;1259856; said:
I said it in the game thread and I'll repeat it here: When the play of the QB makes it harder for the other players on the team to do their jobs, it's time for a change. I wish it wasn't true, but I think that time is fast approaching. He just hasn't been the same since that disastrous finish the the MSU game last year.
Perfectly stated.

Todd is a class act. He keeps on fighting no matter what happens. I do believe he should have been taught how to deal with pressure better. He looks somewhat confused whenever someone comes at him and won't pull up. I think he needs to learn how to deal with pressure. And, unfortunately, I am afraid that many NFL scouts may take notice of how he has performed in big game situations, and thus his stock in the draft may plummet. It's sad, really. Great guy, talented, bad situation.

Well you can look at this one of two ways. You can say our offense is completely different without Chris Wells and that it is easier for Boeckman to throw with him on the field so we should stick with Boeckman or you could say that Boeckman just isn't the answer at QB for various reasons and we need to bring in one of the other two to start. Personally I don't really see much improvement in Bocekman from last year, even in the previous two games before this one. I felt like he had enough time to throw, he just wasn't getting rid of the ball. If you don't think he had enough time to throw and want to blame the line, Pryor's mobility gives us a better chance to move the ball. If you want to blame the receivers, Pryor's mobility gives us a better chance to move the ball. I think the rest of the Big Ten has improved immensely this year and I'm not sure that we are the shoe in to win the conference as I felt we were before the season. We have two relatively easy games coming up against Troy and Minnesota, if we are going to make the switch during the season now is as good of a time as any.

as a former athlete who finally came to grips with reality, some have it and some don't. coaching only goes so far. no one can be coached how on how to deal with pressure.

Absolutely. The thing that still stands out to me about Boeckman is the pride he showed and the way he kept playing with fight and determination even as he was getting his teeth kicked in by LSU in the bowl game. He definitely has my respect for that. Unfortunately though, at a program like Ohio State with this kind of talent and high expectations, without the results it's not worth much more than a tip of the cap or a pat on the back.

This is true, but he hasn't shown that ability in a long, time. He makes the same mistakes and still just doesn't get the job done when pressured. We've seen it for too long. It's unfortunate, and I hate saying it, but it's simply true.

NFBuck, I definitely know where you are coming from, and by no means am I defending Todd's performance and ability, but there's something that worries much more than just the performance side of it. For all the talk about Beanie not being in this game, we ran the exact same offensive game plan that we ran against LSU tonight. It resulted badly against LSU. It resulted in a similar fashion against USC tonight. I just don't understand why we constantly feel the need to establish a perfect balance between run and pass, especially while we were ripping off huge yardage against LSU with Beanie and against SC with Pryor. The drives that mattered in the first half, it was Todd for one play, Pryor for the next, and then Todd back again. Why not just keep going with something when it works?

And regarding Todd, even though he had a couple of bad throws, like I said going into the game, the issue is not whether he is the best QB on this team, the issue is whether a balanced offense with a pocket QB gives us the best option to win this game, and vice versa. You can blame him for the couple of bad throws that he had, but you can't blame him for getting clobbered by on a third and long when everyone in the stadium or watching on television had already anticipated the result of the play. We simply have not put this kid in the best position to succeed, and that's too bad, because as we saw on the first couple of drives, when used wisely on well timed and well designed plays, Todd can be a tremendous weapon for us down field by hooking up with Small and Robo (who should've caught that pass over the middle).

This whole thing, the way that Todd is dejected on the sidelines, reminds me of the part from Citizen Kane, when Kane stubbornly forces his unwilling wife, a mediocre singer, to suffer embarrassment from crowds in definance of criticism of her singing. Only in this case, Todd can be effective, but you gotta build a much better game planning than we did tonight, or for that matter, the past two years.

As a SC fan, here's my two cents.

Whenever TP came into the game in the first quarter, I got scared. Why? Because he was throwing the SC D way off balance and was pretty much picking up a first down every time he touched the ball. That said, however, one of the reasons SC was having difficulty with pryor is that they probably didnt plan on seeing much of him and looked out of sync against him from the get go. They changed that in the second half and TP was way less effective.
The reason I think Boeckman will stay in this year is that TP still isn't a good enough passer and good enough at reading the defense to go all game long without the opposing defense figuring him at. Eventually in tonight's game, the SC defense figured out that he was gonna either:

A) Hand off
B) Scamper

There wasn't much of a passing threat there so the SC linebackers just stayed hom and waited to stuff him. As a rookie you just can't expect him to be at the point where he can react to defenses like Vince Young did and beat them with his legs or with his arm. He needs at least this season before he can start, in my opinion. Until then, it's gonna be Boeckman.

First, Congrats.

Second, pt will help with both the others.

But Pryor was also tossing it effectively to the sideline WR when there were no running lanes.

Agreed. For everything that was disappointing about Boeckman's performance, I think we saw plenty of evidence of Pryor's inexperience out there tonight too. I distinctly remember one play where he scrambled for a small loss or no gain, and there was a receiver wide open down the field if he had kept looking to pass. I don't think he's ready to be the man yet.

Is anybody starting to miss Henton or Schoenhoft yet? Not that they'd make a difference, but I think you'd be able to have a more serious discussion about replacing Boeckman if there was some experience on the bench between him and Pryor.
