Old picture of late 58 year old husband....who started living with her when she was 15 - and married her at 16.



Two of her dogs had been killed recently, and some of her husband's pain medication had disappeared from her home lately - making her think that it was the guy.

I'm thinking he wanted drugs and a "date". Wish I knew what she had loaded in the 12 gauge.

My neighbor had an incident where someone came knocking on his door at 1AM. He put his wife and child in the master closet, and told her to call the cops. He wasn't sure what was up, but went down stairs with his rifle to see what the guy wanted. It took the cops about 15 min to respond, and we live in a small town where it seems cops are never far. Turns out that they all gathered in mass close by, then all came swarming in together at the same time. Four cops were on duty that night at 1AM, and all four showed up. Some of them must have been on the other side of town, and the others wouldn't go in without all of them there. I can kind of understand it, as they want back up, but if someone is breaking into your house, and you are unarmed, that is a long time to wait. Luckily for my neighbor he had a gun, and it was just a misunderstanding anyways, but it really made me think about how vulnerable we are if it takes the cops 15 min to respond.

The age difference gives me the willies. And the fact that she was a minor when they were living together / married. My wife wondered why she was home alone on new years if people had been bothering her and her husband just died the week before--great question that is probably answered by the odd nature of her marriage. I don't want to take away from the courage it took to dispose of this guy, but there is a lot of strange business with this story that is going relatively unreported in the American media.

And it wouldn't be the first time that someone did something considered heroic that unintentionally drew the attention of the media to themselves, only to have that spotlight illuminate their private lives in an unflattering way. As far as we know, this young woman did nothing to create the situation with the intruder. She probably saved her child's life, as well as her own. As a reward, every possible detail of her formerly private life will now be fodder for scrutiny by countless strangers, us included.

Wasn't there a story of some guy--possibly during one of the many attempts on Gerald Ford's life--who stopped one of the attackers, was hailed a hero, then had it become public knowledge (against his wishes) that he was gay? Tricky thing, fame.
