Why is Life so Unfair to the SEC

Here's a nice little dose of reality for the SEC brought to you by Stewart Mandel's Mailbag. Excellent point, I also recommend reading the first two question/answers in the article related to Ohio State here.

Isn't it funny how we heard from SEC fans at the start of the season that Tennessee losing to Cal was OK because "it was the sixth-best SEC team against the second-best Pac-10 team?" Now, I look at the standings and see that the second-best SEC team actually lost to the seventh-best Pac-10 team. How ironic is that?

Touche. I wonder if anyone's attempted to make a similar defense for Alabama, the ninth-best team in the SEC, losing to the Sun Belt's third-place team, Louisiana-Monroe.

Good plan. That'll mend fences for sure.

I am trying to mend fences. I dialed it back to the OSU hat, my original plan was to go dressed as Sherman in full uniform but I figured they'd give me shit about the sword at the gate.

Good stuff. I wish someone would hire Mandel as an on-air analyst.

Moreover, I'm sick of these myopic claims about Ohio State "backing in" to the NC game. It's as if fans hold you responsible for other teams losing (and frankly, they need to get a grip). Under the system we have that's just the way things work and I have no problem with that. Why is the Oklahoman in Mandel's mailbag judging your team on last year's performance rather than this year's merits? Ludicrous.

I've seen similar arguments from several UM fans and they're puerile at best -- especially considering that last year the same people screamed foul from the highest mountaintop that UM didn't get to face tOSU for the championship despite having lost head-to-head.

[Also, while I'm not trying to do the iffa-coulda-shoulda-woulda shuffle here, I think it's important to consider that had the result of the Illini's first big gainer been ruled the touchback it was in reality rather than the play that set up their first score, the remainder of the game may have gone down quite differently. Perhaps not, but I strongly suspect it weren't for that blown call, tOSU would be 12-0 and this would be a different discussion entirely. Someone, somewhere, would be crying about WV "backing in" to the NC game should Missouri fall to OU.]

Part of the "backing-in" sentiment has to do with the fact that Ohio State is "in the clubhouse"-- if not with the lead.

But, yeah... the reality is... that how many different teams have been in those top 2 spots this year and blown it? Blame all of them,.

I liked all that you said, but the usage of puerile gets a definite GPA.
