Today I am in Charleston, SC eating at a local eatery with my wife and son. My son plays football at Charleston Southern University and our server noticed my son's shirt which had the school's name on it and he commented on it. We told him we were in town for our son's Spring game. And that was the extent of the conversation until he delivered the check the exchange went something like this....
Server: How much does it cost to go to CSU know a year?
Me: About 25K if you live on campus and are full-time.
Server: Question? Why would anybody want to go there when you could go to Notre Dame for 29K a year? (I think 29k was the amount).
I must admit that the Notre Dame reference came after the server probably overheard our conversation whether my son and I may attend OSU's Spring game next week.
Me: (Trying not to raise my blood pressure) It is probably harder to get into Notre Dame than CSU and we never even thought about sending him to Notre Dame?
Server: Not at all you need a 1180 (?) on the SAT and a grade point average of x.xx (I honestly zoned out by then)
My son: Charlotte Southern has been good for me and I wanted to play football.
Server: I repeat why not a great academic school like Notre Dame that is about the same price? (If this isn't a swipe at my son's school I don't know what is)
Me: (At this point all patience has been exhausted and I am afraid my hatred of ND came to the fore) You may be right if my son would had gone to Notre Dame he could look forward to working in the food service industry.
At this point my wife intervened and said something to smooth over the situation. I don't know what she said but as I walked to the car I just couldn't believe the gall of the guy. Without asking he interjected his opinion. Maybe he doesn't like OSU, maybe he doesn't like football players, maybe he is just terribly distraught over his station in life, I don't know and I don't care. I probably should have called the manager over, but the meal was great and my son and my wife didn't seem to react too strongly to (what I perceived) was an insult. My wife claims I overreacted and my son it doesn't seem to affect him one way or another. But the arrogance of the guy..... OK rant over I feel better now!
