Tate Martell is the wild card in Ohio State’s quarterback competition

Replacing J.T. Barrett is a tall order. Martell thinks he has what it takes to do it.

Like Burrow and Haskins, Martell came to Ohio State as a four-star recruit. He spent the majority of the season as the scout team quarterback and has earned significant praise from teammates, including Sam Hubbard, in this role.

Give me the player who wins games... Martell didn't lose one game in HS, he's the most explosive QB we've since Braxton, and anyone that resembles Trace/Baker I'm all in on that.

I think it'll be Haskins but Martell needs to play somehow

I personally feel if Urban borrowed a couple pages from Lincoln Riley on the commitment to the down hill run, then setting up the passing game with misdirection while working the 3 man vertical game Haskins could the guy. This would also cut down on the exposure to unnecessary QB hits from running by design or scramble too many times.

What OU does with Mayfield is a beautiful example of what I'm trying to say. Haskins in that mold would be disgusting.

I always want mobility in a QB because it presents an x factor that puts extra stress on the defense in both the running and passing game.

On the other hand, Meyer has leaned on QB mobility too much in his tenure at OSU. It pays off from time to time but ultimately holds back the offense from evolving a more consistent passing game

Haskins can scramble a bit, but for the time being cannot run option plays. I think he's shown flashes of great potential, but can Meyer actually commit to develop an offense with a pro style QB, and will it be effective, or a complete mess like in '15 with Cardale?

I think Haskins' passing ability puts him in front, and I'd like to see the offense continue to evolve.

He also played for a football factory that literally recruits nationally in a small state where none of the in-state schools can compete. I'm not saying Martell isn't the guy next year, but you can't pin Gorman's success on him.

You're better off arguing that Gorman is a juggernaut that wins without him, because their schedule was absurd in his final year

Cedar Hill Tx
Cocoa FL
St John Bosco CA
Kahuku HI
St. Thomas Aquinas FL

Good point, considering Bishop Gorman just won their NINTH consecutive state title!

Talk in Nevada about essentially kicking them out of the highest division (or numerous schools in Vegas and Reno voluntarily dropping down a division) to force them to just become a national barnstorming team. And from Josh's point, it would seem as though they're halfway there already.

Haskins going into spring definitely has the upper hand.

I like the idea of a more true pocket passer with relying mostly on the RBs to run the ball. Would be ok with some Martell run packages here and there, but as of now i'm 100% in on Haskins.

I don't rememebr seeing any recent polls on Buckeye Planet (and this will undoubtedly be a "hot topic") so.....

Who do you think will be Ohio State's starting QB verses the Beavers on 1 Sep 18?

a. Dwayne Haskins

b. Joe Burrow

c. Tate Martell

d. Matthew Baldwin

e. Another player

I'll go with Haskins for now, but we shouldn't give up on Joe Burrow just yet, who sat most of the season out due to injury.

We should be confident it'll all work out for the best, though. GO BUCKS!!!!

I just want to see a full-on winner take all competition. Let them all get reps with every group against what might be the best defense in the country next year. Keep the stats and success/fails. Note what each makes work and what doesnt then apply that to fall camp.

I absolutely want the Spring Game this year to be much closer to a REAL game and see just what these kids can do when it's on the line.
