Urban has been a head coach for 16 years

How many of those 16 have seen him use a pure pocket passing QB and how many have seen him rely on a guy who can run?

Chris Leak, Florida

Meyer inherited Leak in 2005. He didn't perfectly fit the spread offense Meyer used because Leak wasn't much of a runner. But Leak had two good seasons under Meyer (43 touchdown passes, 63 percent completions), culminating with a national championship in 2006. That season Leak handled most of the quarterback duties, but the freshman Tebow complemented him as a running threat.

Pro career: Signed as an undrafted free agent in 2007 by the Chicago Bears, Leak never played in a regular-season NFL game.

I just want to see a full-on winner take all competition. Let them all get reps with every group against what might be the best defense in the country next year. Keep the stats and success/fails. Note what each makes work and what doesnt then apply that to fall camp.

I absolutely want the Spring Game this year to be much closer to a REAL game and see just what these kids can do when it's on the line.

That's why there is no way I'll count Tate out. Kid played Baker McSorely this year against our defense. The D seemed to have comments about it.

Exactly

The one guy he had that was more passer than runner lost PT for packages that used the runner

Wilson has had success using a non running QB
Meyer has little to none
It's Urbans team and Urbans offense

My money is on Martell

Definitey don't count Tate out, I posted this last November:

Re: For his high school career, he went 45–0 as a starter and finished second in Nevada history with 7,510 passing yards and 113 touchdowns. As a senior, he was the Gatorade Football Player of the Year after leading the team to a 15–0 record, while passing for 2,362 yards and 41 touchdowns, and rushing for 1,253 yards and 21 touchdowns

Tate is a "winner" plain and simple. He could be the Ohio State equivalent of the "on the field" Johnny Manziel without the "off the field" Johnny Football baggage.

I'll go with Haskins for now, but we shouldn't give up on Joe Burrow just yet, who sat most of the season out due to injury.

We should be confident it'll all work out for the best, though. GO BUCKS!!!!

:urban2:
Just an afterthought........Saying that Haskins gets the gig, if the speculation I've seen about Burrow bears out, we'd best have our shit together when Nebraska comes to town. Just sayin'.

:oh:

It will be Haskin or Burrows, given the reps my money is on Haskins.

We wont see Tate until mop up duty if he really is that much better he wont start before game 5 ... simple reason is numbers. If Tate wins the job in the spring Haskins is gone, Burrows talks about not being gone but if he loses in the spring.. he's gone too.. so you'd enter fall camp with Tate and Matt.. which Urban wont allow to happen.

To be clear, I don't think Martell is opening day starter but I do think he takes over eventually (in 2018)

With all due respect to Land Grant Holy Land, and Tate Martell, I believe that Joe Burrow is THE wild card in the QB battle. He has the talent, and the skills to be the starting QB at tOSU, but it appears that Haskin's production against Michigan is against Joe. He could go and have two years eligibility at some other institution, and it would be hard to fault him for doing so. Fresh start and all that. (Maybe Cincinnati). Having said that, would love to see him stay and win the job back, but kinda believe that UFM's looking at Dwayne pretty hard. Regardless of what Joe Burrow does/goes, I will wish him the very best, and root for this kid in life, as well as the gridiron. Go Bucks! Go Joe!

He also played for a football factory that literally recruits nationally in a small state where none of the in-state schools can compete. I'm not saying Martell isn't the guy next year, but you can't pin Gorman's success on him.
That football factory that hadn't lost a game for 4 years lost two this year... I think that shows plenty how much they missed Tate.

Sure he had a lot of talent around him but he also played against the very best programs across the country. It's not like they were playing only local NV teams all year because as has been pointed out they played the very best HS programs.

Fact remains... He never lost. EVER.

Regardless that's insanely difficult to do

With all respect to Joe though I think he's not mobile enough (although maybe more so then Dwayne) to overcome the talent that Dwayne has throwing the ball.

Joe is less mobile then Tate but with a better arm, and he's not as good of a thrower as Dwayne but is more mobile.

Guess that is why Urb has three in the stable. Each one of the three excels at one of the three skills: mobility; better arm; better thrower. I'd rank Tate as best mobility, Burrows as better arm; Dwayne as better thrower. Maybe there is a fourth skillset? Called moving the team and/or putting the ball in the end zone. JT excelled at the fourth one. Dunno, that's why Urb is paid $6 mill a year, to put the pieces together. It will be interesting to watch. Anyone got tickets to be a fly on the wall of the O conference room? Go Bucks!
