New guess: Gene Fekete
That's correct. Here's the balloting for the Heisman at the end of our first NC season in 1942:

I led my Ohio State teams in rushing more than 1 year. I have more rushing yardage (indivual season and career) than 4 of Ohio State's Heisman Trophy winners, however I never won the Heisman Trophy. I was drafted into the NFL by the New Orleans Saints. I had a "very solid" NFL career that lasted 9 seasons. I accumulated 4350 rushing yards over those 9 seasons and was selected to the pro bowl once.

Who am I?

Yes, it is Jim Otis. Here is #35 running up some yardage against Michigan:

sandgk, you are now "on the clock" for a question.

OK -- I hope I ask this right way (i.e. slightly misleading).

"I'm married to a Gospel Singer who sang the National Anthem twice before Pro games in which I played ball.
While with the Buckeyes I had 91 more rushing yards on 246 fewer attempts than in my pro career.
I was twice invited to the Cincinnati Red's tryout camp. -- Who am I?"

Negative on both Raymont Harris and Ron Springs.

Clue 1 -- I was in the Pro Bowl only once.

Clue 2 -- I broke a Buckeye benchmark for rushing that had held for ten years, and my benchmark held for eleven years.

Hey -- who enlarged my avatar?

Yep ScriptOhio -- twas Daytyon's finest -- he still hosts events down there I think to help out youth and the like and was the consummate team player.

Here are the stats:

Pro:
Rushing

TOTAL | 189 | 865 carries 3109 yards 3.6 ave 23 TD

College
3,200 Keith Byars 619 att. ........... 1982-85 TD 50
A hint of things to come in the pros came in the game against Purdue in 1984 where he amasssed
354 All Purpose Yards

In a 14 year pro career he also had consistent receiving stats

An easy one:

What Ohio State quarterback while inside the Boilermakers 20 yard line and driving for the potiental winning touchdown in the waning seconds of a game at Purdue in the mid 1980s chucked the ball out of bounds ON 4TH DOWN to stop the clock?

I was at that game, what a disappointment losing that way. Talk about snatching defeat out of the jaws of victory!!!
