That said, 2 in 1s don't make sense (short of the ultra expensive surface units). Buy tablets to tablet. It's like seeking out a boat anchor laptop for on the go laptoping.

Chromebook.

I'm still in the Chromebook camp. My first Acer c720 got passed down to my wife and I bought a refurb Acer CB5 for like $130. I just got the update so I can install Android apps on it. I'm sure the touch screen models are better for the Android Apps, but it fixes most of the complaints I had about the Chromebook. Performance always stays the same and whenever it does die you are only out a couple hundred to replace it. There seem to be a lot of refurbs coming out of schools now that I would avoid. I'm pretty sure the one I bought was a lightly used return from someone that didn't get Chromebooks.

Bought the kids their own chromebooks for xmas. Pretty cheap and work well. 7 year old locked herself out by creating a pattern lock then promptly forgetting it. Now I think the only solution is a factory reset. Smh

A regular laptop makes more sense in most situations but for ultimate portability a tablet like my Samsung Tab S2 (8in.) works great. I'm mostly using it as a "fancy" remote control for stereo(controls Tidal on a Raspberry Pi) right now but it's made several trips and has performed great.

Asus makes some great "gaming" laptops. The higher end models have color accurate screens in the 900-1300 range, but you can get killer machines closer to $600-650 on sale with run of the mill screens (they look fine, just aren't color accurate).

The last few years gaming laptops have shifted from being tanks to sleek units. Not ultra-portable but not that heavy nor do they run very hot.

As always, I refer folks to slickdeals for their deal hunting.



Also, for anyone desiring a tablet, I buy lightly used Apple Ipad Mini 2's for about $110 for my photo business. I'd recommend something like that if you want a portable tablet unit. Even the sleekest 2 in 1 is going to be bulky, and you're now overpaying for a lower end laptop.
