read may not be all that great for reading books, but whatevs, I'd rather get him a product overall tablet for a good price than spend $50 more for a bigger screen but worse tablet
buying a tablet to read books is foolish. Get a regular kindle, it's very cheap, it last for months (battery) and the screen is easy on the eyes. Staring at a flickering computer screen is not relaxing like a book or kindle.

well he's gonna do both, it wasn't just for reading books

and I'm emphasizing that it's very weak for reading books compared to a kindle. You can find a used one for $35 and you won't cry if it gets ruined at the pool, beach or elsewhere.

Heck, a NEW kindle 6" is only $69 with promotional ads ($89 without).

I have a 10" Android tablet that I use for its Kindle app (and for many other purposes). I'd never use my wife's 6" Kindle tablet, as it's just too small for me. Others may disagree, I'm just providing my point of view.

they make big kindle's too

I don't like small tablets but a reading device is another story.

(that said, most of my fiction is read to me by audio books )

They don't make a 10-inch Kindle, though, which is the form factor I like.

But I sure wouldn't spend $400 on a 10-inch reader. I need my tablet for other, work-related stuff. The fact I can use it as a reader also is just whipped cream.

I don't own one, but I'm very intrigued by the Surface essentially being a full blown PC.

Except that with the RT OS you can't install apps like Office, but I've heard it's coming. If I was going for Windows 8 I'd look at one of the ultrabooks like the yoga unless the price comes down on the Surface. My boss got one liked it, but returned it. IMO the surface would be a better option if they could get you out the door for $400 with the keyboard.

I don't think the Windows App store is going to have as good of Apps as Play or Apple for the lifetime of a Surface bought right now so you need to take that into account.

Are the Nexus 7 2nd Gen still as good as they were rated before, or are there better options out there nowadays? I misplaced my Nook on a Flight, and now I'm in need of a new tablet and e-reader.

I bought one a few months ago and I really like it. Android L (5.0) is very nice. I came from a 1st Gen N7 and am very happy with my choice. Anything specifically you want to know about it?

Thanks for the feedback CMO!
Josh's old link to slickdeals pulled this one up on ebay:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Asus-Google..._Tablets&hash=item486dc486ee&afepn=5337259887

Would you have any concerns with this? And these do no offer MicroSD card slots, correct?
For the price/quality you can't beat the Nexus 7s. I've used both v1 & v2. If you want to store a ton of stuff on their then you'll need more than 16GB. I would look around else where to see if someone has some old stock they are selling, that way you dont have to be a refurb.
