Where was the last place you went on vacation?

While working in the sandpit, i used Istanbul to break up the long flights between US.
Turkish Air has a program where you can book 16-24hr layovers, and they will provide a free hotel in the tourist area (near Hagia Sophia).
Istanbul is massive. The trains are easy to use once you manage to get a card. A lot of tourism stuff to do, great food, easy to get around.
My last trip was during a Galatasaray - Besiktas match... and it was pure insanity. They started singing at 11 am, and were still going when i left for the airport at 4 am.

back in August ‘21 i took a (long) weekend drive from South Louisiana to Ogden, Utah. With a quick road trip through southwest Wyoming.

Northwest New Mexico is absolutely amazing and I never would have guessed that.

the Arches and red rocks area of southern Utah is everything i could have imagined and then some.

Salt Lake City is much smaller than i expected.
Park City is obviously a winter town and was completely dead in the summer.

the mountain scenic road between Evanston Wyoming and Park City on the other hand was awesome too.

and while not vacations, in the last 5-7 years i’ve worked in
Houston area of Texas, Muscle Shoals area of Alabama, down yonder on the Chattahoocie in Georgia, the northern panhandle of Florida, McComb, MS, on a barge near the mouth of the Mississippi River, and now the deserts of West Texas into New Mexico.

on weekends off, we taken drives through the Davis Mountains and the Guadalupe Mountains in West Texas.
No, they aren’t the Rockies of Colorado or Utah, but still reallly nice drives.

Carlsbad Caverns is on our list of places to see as is Big Bend National Park to my south down on the border.

Reminded me... Many decades ago when you could catch a ride in a small plane that flew you into the grand canyon and even landed in there on a ledge... I remember being overwhelmed... there was no way to ever convey the enormity of what I was looking at... and I knew it.. so my brain was taking lifetime snapshots... a camera could never do it justice... one of those where you had to experience it live

You probably know this, but it’s worth it to be there at sunset at Carlsbad to see the bats taking off by the hundreds of thousands.

I've hiked the grand canyon a few times, you haven't seen it until you've gone to the bottom on foot, wish digital had been around when I did it

Yes, an amazing experience. I did it when I was 28 years old. Not sure my close to 50 year knees could take the descent. Me and a friend camped next to there Colorado for 2 nights. The extra day was great to recover and also went on a long hike along the river.
