Where is the best place to see the Rocky Mountains

lots of good places named, i like durango as a town.
crippled creek is also a neat little town, the last tiem i was there maybe 10 years ago it was still straight out of the 1800s. the city is at 9500 ft.
great sand dunes are interesting, giant dunes
gunnsion.
that area has many cool things, mountains, valleys, gorges etc that you should check out.

that being said tetons, glacier, baniff and any shinny tournament in whl territory will be a good time. im partial to the canadian stuff but i have a couple of buddies in calgary, edm etc that make it cheaper, better and more fun.

all that said buy a cheap travel guide, thumb through it with your wife, kids, boyfriend and take a look.

Hey BestBuckeye - sorry I missed this thread until now.

My family just came out for a week vacation to the west of Colorado Springs - it's the first time I've spent much time down there.

It was pretty, and we had a great time (mostly because I got to see my nieces and nephews interact with our 2.5 month old daughter), but the scenery and everything was nice (I enjoyed the cog train, cave of the winds was okay but the caves near Glenwood Springs in western Colorado are more pristine)...

But...

Colorado Springs doesn't have the dramatic mountains that you'd find in central and southwestern Colorado. Sure, Pike's Peak is cool - but it's the only big mountain near there - if you look at a physical map, you'll see that Pike's sits kinda off on it's own.

That's not to say there isn't great scenery - in fact, I have a suggestion I haven't seen mentioned (and I haven't been myself, but have certainly heard/read about). About 50 or so miles southwest of Colorado Springs is a town call Canon City (pronounced 'canyon, but spanish spelling - tilda doesn't show up on BP), which boasts the Royal Gorge. Word is it's pretty spectacular. Also, I suspect there's some pretty killer views of the Sangre De Cristo Range (different from the range of the same name seen from Taos) a bit further southwest. You could also consider a drive to Buena Vista (around 100 miles), up the Arkansas River Valley. They didn't name it 'Buena Vista' for nothin'. :wink: Further up the Arkansas Valley is Leadville, which I *think* is the highest incorporated city in the States and is set in a beatiful place. Closer to the Colo. Spgs. is a little town called Manitou Springs, not a bad little downtown area w/ shops, etc. Kinda 'touristy' in spots, but still kinda neat - that's where you catch the Cog train.

Check out Old Colorado City, take a trip on Gold Camp Road (if you need directions, PM), check out the Buffalo Wild Wings on Woodmen Road, its owned by a Buckeye Alum so it's "Buckeyed Out", it's really awsome there because in game days, all the Buckeye fans go there to watch the game and there is an old couple that acts as TBDBITL. Check out the vid.

Also, the Academy is nice. Take a trip out to 11 Mile Resevoir, Aspen, Estes Park. Any more info, just let me know. Colorado Springs being home, I know a bunch of areas that would be great to visit. Most of the sites to see are within a couple hour drive. Like FCollinsBuckeye said, Canon City is gorgeous also!

Just a little story I remembered today, kinda about Colorado...

While driving home from Utah, we stopped at a "travel plaza" gas station west of...Vail (?). I picked up a drink and a snack, headed up to pay, and the girl working was wearing an Ohio State hoodie. She cards me for my smokes, and as I hand my i.d. over, I ask her if she's from Ohio. She tells me no, born and raised in whatever town we were in. I ask her what's up with the hoodie. She tells me her whole family are huge Buckeye fans. I ask why, and she tells me her late great-(great?) grand father was once the head coach...Now I'm thinking, I know about every name of past coaches, she won't be able to get over on me...she says Francis Schmidt. I say "close the gates of mercy!, gold pants!!", she almost screams, YES, and you could just see how proud she was. She said that of course, most folks out that way hadn't really heard the name, and was just thrilled that I knew who he was.

She was pretty easy on the eyes too. :pimp:

It's not the best, but it sure was cool.......

I attended a baseball game at Coor's field in Denver once. The open end of the stadium faces west towards the mountains. That evening the sun set was perfect in that it was a little cloudy and the sun went down right over the mountains at the open end of the stadium. It was by far the most scenic setting ever for a sporting event that I have attended. It was right in the middle of the game too. That I had already caught a nice buzz made it all the better.
