Where do you buy your work shoes? (WARNING-Mind-numbing thread alert!!)

I tend to stick with J&M for dress shoes (My wife has finally learned to stop buying Kohl Hann's... I rip through the leather in no time)... My casual shoes also tend to be J&M... I stick with Vasque boots (they last forever and are great... I've owned three pairs in 17 years, and wear/wore them frequently, esp. in highschool and college)... when the deals are good I've been know to pick up a pair of basic Bass shoes (mildly dressy... no wings, just penny's/tassels)...

I know people like NYBuck probably get $2000 alligator shoes from god knows where in Italy

No - from Northampton England....

Oh goody - another mens clothes thread.

I suppose the first question to ask, other than price, is what you are going to do with them. If you are going to stand up all day, I recommend rubber soles. Also, if you are going to have to wear shoes like them every day, I advise to get at least two pairs as leather shoes need time to air out between wearings. If you sit and dont have far to walk and dont walk far in bad weather, Id recommend leather soles.

As far as contries of origin, Id list the following in decending order - England, Italy, USA. Im not sure Id buy shoes not made in one of these three.

As far as brands, Ill list them from most expensive on down -

(England)
Edward Green
John Lobb
Crockett and Jones
Grenson
Alfred Seargent
Loake

(Italy)
Gravati
Santoni
Ferragamo

(USA)
Alden
Allen Edmonds

Most of the shoes listed here will last 20+ years with care and resolings, so the true long term cost should be taken into account. The ones at the top in England (EG, Lobb) are the best money can buy, but do cost a bundle (Saks carries EG at $950 retail!). The Italian shoes def have their fans, but I find they just dont last as long or look quite as good as the British ones. Also, the styles can get crazy.

For the dollar, believe it or not, Allen Edmonds is my favorite. They are not insanely expensive (have seen them for $150ish on sale) and are made very well. Also, they have a good resole program where they send you a bag to send them back to the factory in.

More known names like Johnston and Murphy can be good, but I know their quality isnt quite what it used to be.

Finally, when you get your shoes, be sure to polish them immediately. A scratch on an unpolished shoe will be there as long as you own them. Also, a good set of cedar shoe trees inserted for a day after wearing will make your shoes last almost indefinitely.

Hope the babble was helpful.

I try to support American Made and Buy Allen Edmunds either at their outlet store or I've seen some at DSW that I would have bought if I had needed them.

Dang bastards are hanging by a very thin thread though, if these new ones wear out too quick I'll stop buying them.

I had a pair of Skechers sandals a few years back and man were they comfortable.

Skechers are probably some of the most comfortable shoes I've put on.

Used to get some dress shoes at Famous Footwear but not as of late.

I know they carry Skechers as well.

I agree sketchers are he way to go casual or semi-professional. Although I stole my cousin's Dr. Martens recently, and although they weigh about 6lbs a piece, not too shabby

I actually received some compliments on my shoes today. Someone I work with said they were sharp and my assistant said I dress "spiffy."

Also, I was at this meeting today and noticed this one guy I cannot stand was wearing those man boots. Man, I hate those things and the first thing I thought was that it figured he owned them.
