  • Like most of us I had to work in order to make ends meet will attending college, you know for the important things wine, women and song. I was just wondering were each of us worked and what kind of job duties you had while attending OSU or any other university.

As for me I didn't work my freshman year but things changed in a hurry.

Sophomore Year-worked security from 10pm to 4am at Taylor Tower where I lived.

Junior Year- was an RA at Haverfield House and received free room and board plus $75 a month.

Senior Year-moved off campus and worked at a place called "Timeout" on North campus near the Library Bar on High Street. Job consisted of handing out tokens so customers could play the video games. Also worked at the "sister" store, "Touchdown" on 15th right where Kinko's is now, right across from Long's.

I was fortunate to have a scholarship for undergrad that paid my tuition. I have always worked, so I continued to do so. Most of it went to room, board, pizza and beer (You pick the order).

    Undergrad
First summer I worked at Cedar Point. Made no money but met lots of girls. After that I worked delivering furniture for two years. I made enough to pay my rent, always have spending money and buy a motorcycle. Not bad at all. I also interned in a congressional office for about six months and was paid for the last three.

    Grad School
Worked a month or so as a bartender, but the place sucked and I made no money. Spent a semester or two doing some research work on campus. Good money, boring as hell. After that I interned for one summer at a small community center and made dirt. My last year I interned for a suburb of Columbus, made decent money and they provided me with the resources to do my thesis. That then landed me my first post grad position.

I averaged working 25-30 hours a week while maintaining a full load of classes. I was focused enough to finish undergrad in four years and grad school in two.

While at OSU, I had several jobs:
-Worked at a record store in the mall.
-Worked in a warehouse, pulling orders, packing and shipping them for a place that sold aftermarket Harley parts.
-Worked at the Sears distribution center (west side of town, I think) packing orders for shipping.
-Worked as a bellman at the Holiday Inn in Worthington.

And the coolest job was working for the university delivering AV equipment to classrooms. We drove vans around to the different buildings to make deliveries and pick-ups, and we really only "worked" for about 20 min. out of every hour. The rest of the time we did homework, went up to High St., or just hung out.

First year I worked with campus ITS computer support. Then I got a second job with the computer labs on campus.

My second year I became an RA for our dorm and I was promoted to computer labs manager. Because of the added responsibilities, hours and pay, I quit the ITS job.

My third and fourth year I was an intern with computer support in the Law Organization at the Marathon Oil Corporate office. I worked there for my extra semester at school as well.

Now I have a job in the same office as an IT Systems Integrator with Marathon Ashland Petroleum.

Worked for several of the finer dining establishments around town at the time, including the Gourmet Market (now Spagio) and a couple others. The best job I had was working at Muirfield Village for a couple years. One of those years happened to be 87 when they hosted the Ryder Cup. What an awesome event.

    Year 1 & 2 (1992): Didn't work, unless spending Daddy's money counted as job.

Year 3 (January 2002): BW-3's off 23 November through April 2003, step classes at local YMCA

Year 4: Step and pilates classes, free-lance bartending

Year 5&6: 3rd shift at a corporate fitness center, step and pilates classes

Year 7: Lets hope I don't see this year

Plus I have a full-time job at home, 4 kids......

I am the poster child for all of your children or future children as to why to go to college after HS and don't screw off. Have them call me. Though college at 30ish is a blast, getting HW/studying done is intersting at times.

I didn't work my first three years-parents took care of stuff, plus summer job money

Senior year-worked in the main mail room at Oxley-Thompson Library. It was a blast. One of the guys I worked with was an ex-OG from the South Side of Chicago. One of the funniest guys I have ever met, and told me stories that raised my hair on end. The best day of the month was the 1st/2nd/3rd-it varied-magazine day. Hustler, Playboy, Sporting News,SI-you name it. We would always get memos from the Rare Books room to send the Hustlers/Playboys up after a week, because that is where they were stored.

Grad school-worked at a local Public Works dept. part time, then got a job as a waiter/busser/bartender

As an undergraduate 75% of my tuition was covered by scholarships and my parents paid for room and board, so I didn't have to work a lot in college. Plus, I was a miser in college...my wife would probably argue that I still am.

First three years worked as a cashier at Meijers in Findlay during summers and breaks.

Fourth year worked as an Admissions Telecounselor for OSU. (I was one of those people who called high school Juniors and Seniors trying to convince them to come to Ohio State).

Volunteered at the Admissions Office as a University Host and Tour Guide every year at OSU except my Freshman.

For graduate school, I was a graduate assistant in the Fisher College of Business. I was an academic advisor for Honor students and helped with recruitment for the college. Great deal in that for 20 hours of work per week I received a full tuition waiver and a $1000/month stipend.
