When the New Boss is a ScUMmer

During my last few years on active duty in the Air Force, my squadron commander (and, since I was the First Sergeant, my immediate supervisor) was an Ohio State grad (in fact, he was the one who got me on to Bucknuts which utilmately led here). But, his boss (full Colonel, group commander) was Michigan grad. He actually was a nice guy and despite the difference in rank we were able to give each other some real good-natured ribbing...this was near/at the end of the Cooper Era so obviously the colonel had the ups on us. But, when I retired (literally as Tressel coached his first game) and ended up working about 100 feet down the hall as an IT contractor, we kept in touch and after Tressel led us to the upset in 2001, from that time on we've had a standing bet on The Game (which he has always honored). Even now, despite his being now-retired in Colorado, the bet is still on...he and his wife have a time-share on Maui and they come back for a few weeks every two years and this past January while they were here he gave me the two six-packs of hefeweizen for the 2005 and 2006 games. Hard to stomach the fact a Michigan grad can actually have honor and integrity...

I emailed my boss today since I needed a day off and thanked for covering for me. I told him that I was able to see my oldest daughter graduate with her Masters in Business Finance and after that I settled in and surfed the internet where I found some nice pictures I wanted to share with him. I attached the pictures below saying that I'm sure he has many similar pictures in his possession. I suppose I was trying to test his sense of humor and keep this rivalry friendly. I'll know on Monday what his reaction was to the pictures. I have started to pin up newspaper clippings and other tOSU artifacts can be noticed throughout my office. I really think it'll be in good clean fun but I'm still testing the waters. Anyway the pictures...

Go Bucks :osu:

A few years ago I had a Michigan grad for a boss for a few weeks. I mentioned that this would make for a lively time in the office around The Game, and he responded, "What is that? Is that football?"

No fun. :(

Now... break into his computer and set every action to play Buckeye sounds, and turn the sound all the way up... right before his big presentation. Find a picture of last year's scoreboard and a Kinko's that prints banner-sized pictures. Always email bad news in maize and blue and good news in scarlet and gray. If he has children, start sending them OSU college brochures with "emergency" stamped on the front. With Buckeye compatriots, stage an intervention disguised as a meeting and never relent.

My bosses brother is a Michigan Fan, not a grad, but a few years ago I replaced the license plate frame on his car with a tOSU one, took him about a week to notice, it's really amusing because he has a big wolverines sticker in the middle of his rear window, he said he realized it when someone pulled up next to him and told him he was confused.

The emailed pictures were well received. Humored, he replied back to me "Now why would you send me this crap?"

My response, "When the #11 rated team beats the #3 rated team with a bunch of freshman mixed in there, Lloyd will need to find a new job" He didn't know they were freshman, my bad.

Kinko's I need your help again, my boss wanted to know who that #3 RB is, try making me a lifesize picture of this guy.

So, I work for three scUMmers, Tuesday will be interesting. How do I go in and not laugh is really the question?

Not sure how you can get these over the holiday, but as soon as possible...

Here's a t-shirt:

For a more formal office, you could go with this:

or simply state that you, like Michigan, couldn't manage a tie. Actually, I guess that one works on Tuesday even without ordering anything. :p

You must feel pretty secure in your job. Just be wise and don't cross the line. Constant aggravation can get to anyone, no matter how "good natured" it is.

Good advice, I'll save it for the Game and just keep easing my way toward that day. I need the job, the bonus and no bad reps as we are having a good business year. However, the pictures and press clippings will continue!

Go Bucks! :osu:

2008 Update

After several months, a Big Ten Championship, another run at a NC, amd now Terrelle Pryor selecting the good guys, my boss has eased up a little.

It turns out he doesn't like Mike Hart much, thought Henne let him down during the regular season (he did help them beat Florida), Mario choked during The Game, and Boren was a baby for quiting. He really meant he couldn't stand the fact that he may return to Ohio to play because his little brother wasn't being recruited by RR.

In any case, with the rebuilding that is taking place at TSUN, and the lack of a QB to run the offense there, he may be silent this fall. I will continue my loyal Buckeye support by wearing my colors on Friday's before games, posting tOSU articles on my wall, and hanging my Buckeye flag during Game week.

He's OK as a boss, probably as much of M*ch*gan fanactic as I am a Buckeye fanactic. It's been fun. He brought in a Coffee mug filled with buckeyes (he had to call them buckeyes and not chocolate covered peanut butter balls) at Christmas and has bought me lunch. I don't think he has paid up on the beer bet yet but I can wait. I will bet a case of Buckeye Beer the fall on the Game. The taunting is friendly and I think we'll be friends for at least 51 weeks out of the year.

Living in the "great lake state", I for one get it very bad. Last night alone I had a chick ask me, why are you wearing a OSU hoodie and tigers hat??? Isn't that illegal ?? Well my boss for the next week is a huge scUM fan and drop stupid comments ALL the time, along with 3 co-workers. I have one week left there until I start my new job, and I have a funny feeling new boss is a scUM fan as well :(
