What's Your Worst Injury, Ever?

AJHawkfan said:
I tore a bunch of ligaments in my right ankle playing playground football when I was a kid. And then got my left ankle in playground basketball a year or two later. From then on, I was known as Sam Bowie by my high school teammates, as I was spraining an ankle a week. Even now, I can roll and ankle just walking down a perfectly smooth sidewalk.

Yeah-- same here... I've had broken legs, arms, and ribs and all that crap... but.. the thing with broken bones (normally) is that they get casted up and that make you let them heal all the way.... even knee trouble puts you out of business...

Problem with ankles is... you can tape em up... this is bad... both of mine are toast... (But still better than a bad knee)... Oh well, it keeps me excercising... because if I don't, I won't be able to walk.

The loves of being a baseball catcher since being six.

I was 9 yrs old playing in a baseball tournament. A little background, back then I was one of the tallest kids playing little league. I think the alcohol I started drinking at 13 stunted my growth as I am only 6' now. But we never had the proper equipment and my shin guards didn't cover my knees.

Needless to say a kid comes sliding into home plate and his metal spike goes right into my left knee. I thought my knee hurt because I got cut. But 3 months later when my knee still bothered me and a growth started forming on the side of my knee my Mom freaked out! So went to the doctor.

Found out a part of my knee cap got chipped off and since I was still young and growing it caused a leak of cartilage and along with my chipped knee cap started forming a bone off the side of my knee that looked like a half a golf ball.

Of course since I had one knee injury years later of favoring that knee caused my cartilage in my other knee to deteriorate so badly that I could no longer catch which was my meal ticket to a college scholarship as I had a knee surgery my senior year in High School stopping all calls from colleges.

Nothing major for me either...plenty of stitches, two concussions, and three broken fingers after trailing a play and trying to come over the top for the strip as the ballcarrier ducked his head to take on the contact...my fingers were between the two helmets. Dislocated all three and shattered some knuckles...hurts like hell on cold or rainy days.

You guys all realize we are in for painful days in the future right?

No kidding grad! I didn't realize we had such a group of hardasses on our site.

I have another decent story. When I was 7, my Mom took me to the park with my sister. I was climbing up a 15 ft. slide backwards (brilliant I know) and when I reached the top to do my best Rocky on the steps impression, I slipped, fell off and collided with the blacktop with all of my body weight landing on about a 2 square inch section of my forehead right above my eye.

The blood starting spraying out like a hose and I could feel the split in my head so I took my shirt off and put it on my face. Mom comes over, sees what an idiot I am and just about passes out while telling me she can see my skull. After that I have to admit I felt pretty cool. Nonetheless, it got fixed right away with no major damage done. 6 stitches and I was back at the slide business less than a week later.

I already feel like I'm a hell of a lot older than 26. At least my throwing shoulder was repaired pretty well so I can play catch with my brother. I never had any major knee problems. My ankles are gone, but if I wear braces I'm okay. Even if I do sprain one it doesn't say hurt for long. I need to get in better shape to help me in the future.

The future is here. I have been able to predict when fronts are coming through for years now and I am in my early 30's. My ankles are actually worse (they also give out randomly), but my knees are what ache when the weather changes.

To steal an analogy from Roy McAvoy...when I wake up, I "feel like an unfolding lawn chair."

Have to sleep on my left side...the right shoulder locks up. Knees and elbows click and catch frequently.

I'm an idiot though, but I know Hawg and some others can relate here...at practice, if an Oklahoma drill is losing intensity for some reason, I'm usually one of the idiot coaches in there mixing it up with the kids. It doesn't hurt until after practice and then I swear I'll never do it agin...until next time.

Where to start.
I am 45 and feel much older some days, like the last several weeks.
Most of mine are sports related.
I have had four knee surgeries, all on left knee .
Separated my right shoulder in High School and my A/C joint in college.
Broken nose and wrist, neither which were addressed.
Had many ankle sprains, including the pop pop pop of ligaments several times.
I have sheered two knuckles off, one in High school football one while replacing a dishwasher.
Delivered an open hand blow on a college football team and the screw that holds the face mask on ripped all the meat on my hand off below the thumb.
Busted my head open when a kid as a rope I was swinging on broke and I hit the back of head against a rock. Busted my eyebrow open welding underneath a semi-trailer.

When I was in my 30's my doctor told me my joints were at least 10 years older than my chronological age. I am sure they are much older now.

Nothing too bad to report. The assorted bumps, bruises, cuts, torn muscles and stuff that any kid has growing up. The worst by far (pain wise) is a simple smashing of a fingernail or toe nail. I've done that numerous times.

The scarest by far was a weight lifting accident. I was doing free weight squats with an olympic set and bench, the kind that has the squat rack bars on the back side of the bench. So I'm on my last set at 325 lbs and I hit the wall about 3/4 of the way back up. I had never really experience anything like that before, but knew I'd better get that bar racked and soon. The 3 baby steps I could manage to get back to the rack brought me lower and lower. I hit the bars just below the pins (uh oh) so that the bar was against the vertical rails and I couldn't go any further forwards. The weight forced my face straight down and smashed it into the padded bench. So I'm there with 300+ pounds on the back of my neck and my faced pinned to the bench. No way to leverage or roll the bar off my neck. That is the first time in my life I KNEW I was going to die. Luckily, I was working out with a friend who heard my muffled groans. Not a very big guy, but combine we had just enough in us to get the bar rolled off my neck over the top of my head. Unluckily, the bench had several slots for the rack bars to fit in, and we both smashed the shit our of our hands as the bar rolled off my head and slammed into the open ended tubes. Cut my hands up pretty bad (as did the other guy), lost a couple of finger nails, but I was grinning from ear to ear on the way to the hospital ... just couldn't believe I was still alive and kicking.

Never, ever lift free weights without a spotter ... period.

2 Big kidney stones. Too big to pass and too late to blast i the radar tub. They got stuck in the little channel the leads into the bladder. When that happen, there is no where for the urine to go so it backs up and swells up the whole area. Thats where all the pain comes from. They're not kidding when they say stones are one of the most painful things to get.

I threw up multiple times on the way to the hospital, because of the pain. Demeral (sp) and Morphine iv's faild to take away the pain. I told the doctor to just take the f'n kidney out. He laughed, I was serious.

They took me to surgey to extract the stone. The best way (according to thm), to get it was to go up through my junk , grab it, and yank it back through. Problem is, it rips shit up as it's pulled out, so, to keep it from swelling shut the reinserted a long tube into and up to the tube leading out of the kidney. Well, they nneded to have something to get the tube out with, so I had a curled up wire sticking out of my johnson for 8 days. I pissed blood the whole time and it burned like shit every time I drained. The absolute worst part was every morning when I'd wake up with a woodie, the wire would just hurt so damn bad. After the week was up, they had to pull that bastard out bu yanking on the wire !!!

At least on my second stone, no wire was used, they put a numbing gel in there and just yanked it out.

Never helps with bad knees. Of course last night playing our first softball game with the field a little moist I screwed myself into the batters box and landed right on my knee. But I feel worse for the 3B that could not react to the bullet I nailed and hit him in the shin and bounced to the foul line fence. I was still able to get my ass up and hobble to first. All that matters... the scorekeeper called it a single... yeah baby

Knee playing football in HS. Was cut pretty bad on my hand by a knife in a fight. Also broke my metacarpal in my hand boxing (boxers break).
An investment banker in a knife fight? Sounds like there's a story there.
