What's Your Worst Injury, Ever?

A nice bruise I managed to get two weeks ago from falling off a ladder is finally going away. It made me think about my worst injury ever.

In high school I was hit by a car and had my left leg broken. Fortunately, it was a nice clean break and I was out of the hard cast in four weeks and skiing six weeks after being hit. The break was so clean I only knew it was broken because I felt nauseous. Heck, I wasn't sure how bad I had been hit until the first cast was taken off after a couple of weeks and I could see the tire tracks on my leg (Thank God for my buddy who grabbed me as soon as the car hit me).

I have had tons of twisted ankles and knees, smashed and stubbed fingers, maybe a slight concussion once, but have never had stiches.

Anyways, how bad was your worst injury and how long did it take you to recover?

I've had numerous injuries so I'll list two of 'em.

The first goes along the lines of yours... but I didn't get hit by a car, I hit one.

I was about 7 and I was riding my bike around the neighborhood, mind you I didn't live in a very good place. So anyways I was riding my bike and one of the bullies from the neighborhood started chasing me. I was scared to death so I started pedaling as fast as I could while looking behind me to see where he was. As soon as I turned around there was a big ass van in front of me and I didn't have time to stop... Kaboom! I hit that fucking van like a ton of bricks and my eyebrow bone got stuck on the back door handle. As I was dangling from the van by my eyebrow I passed out and the next thing I remember i was in the hospital with a big ass needle in my eye so they could stitch me up. I'll never forget that day.

The second was a football injury, I was a Fullback and a noseguard my whole life, from the time I started playing until my sophomore year (high school) when I quit playing. One distinct play was an ISO and I was supposed to take out the linebacker, but before I could get to him the tackle on that side got bulldozed backwards by two lineman and they all three crashed into my legs. At that moment I thought I would be paralyzed because I saw them coming. All three of them hit my legs and hyperextended both knees to the point that it bent my upper body forward. That was the most painful thing that I have ever been through. My knees swelled up like two basketballs.

I have been lucky in that I have never had anything really gross happen, but I did spiral fracture my left leg playing bouncyball at the rec center when I was in HS. You wouldn't have known anything was wrong with me but that was the most painfull thing I have ever experienced in my life.

tackle football league (for college & post college guys that weren't quite good enuf or past their college playing days)... jumped as high as I could... caught the pass... came down.. spikes planted in turf while starting the spin... and basically kept spinning with CB still landing on top of my shoulders and back... till everything disintegrated...

broke ankle so bad the Ortho guy in emergency told me the only thing holding my foot on was my Achilles tendon and skin...said everything else was gone... multiple surgeries... took at least a year till I could walk normal...

turns out the Ortho surgeon goofed because now the ankle needs a replacement...so it's been a lifetime problem...not that I helped a lot playing hoops 7 days a week and jogging... but if it was put back together right in the first place, I think I would have been OK...

Despite being the type of guy who would dive in just about every sport he played, including ping pong, I never sustained too bad of injuries. However my worst injury was a pretty great crash:

I had been skiing half a day with my buddy and was looking for a little bit of a challenge (both of us were veterans). Our trail was way up high above another trail 50 yards below. There was a steep hill filled with trees separating them. We flew down the first time zinging between the trees and flattened out into the hill below. The next time up I wanted more of a challenge and found a steeper section. I picked my line thru the hazards and went for it.

What I couldn't see from above was the 10 foot ledge at the end of my tree path. Rather than meeting the trail at a harsh angle adn having to compress, my ski tips did a nose dive off the edge of the ledge. My skis stuck straight into the ground, releasing my bindings as I whiplashed face first into the cold snow. My fiberglass goggles shattered into a million pieces as it absorbed most of the shock along with my hands and head.

Those goggles probably saved me a lot of head trauma, tho they were my favorite pair that never fogged up. My thumb felt a little funny, but I decided it was jammed and skied without poles the rest of the day.

X-rays showed it had been twisted into two pieces, and the break was really low, down by the wrist. If you know anything about hands its pretty tough to break your thumb down there.

Anyway I've had more painful injuries after all my years of diving headers into the goalbox filled with swinging cleats, but that one was my most wild one.

Thanksgiving football game 3 years ago I went up for a pass, caught it, and had a 220lb. buffoon land right on my leg and snapped my fibula in two. It happened on the second play of the game and I didn't want to quit, so I played the rest just wondering what the clicking sensation was. I fell over on just about every other play, but I stuck it out and did just fine :) Got an aircast later that day, wore it for 2 days and hobbled around for a month or so until it was all better.

Hmm. Nothing huge for me. Other than fingers and toes and ankle injuries, I broke my left wrist twice and my right wrist and elbow, but they were all minor (though one popped out of the skin and had to be set - tried to do a double flip off a swing. . . lol)

My worst, which is pretty not-cool compared to the stuff you guys went through:

Second grade. Started a fight with third graders. Many chasing me on bikes. I hit something, still don't know what, and flipped my bike. I landed with my handlebars first, hands still on them, shattering various knuckles. Then I skidded down the hill on my face and ripped the skin off one side. I also broke my left wrist and sprained it. I completely passed out.

Yippee.

I tore a bunch of ligaments in my right ankle playing playground football when I was a kid. And then got my left ankle in playground basketball a year or two later. From then on, I was known as Sam Bowie by my high school teammates, as I was spraining an ankle a week. Even now, I can roll and ankle just walking down a perfectly smooth sidewalk.

first one was in high school when i was making a throw to second base, and my elbow blew out.

second was in college during a pick-up basketball and I tried to knock down the rec center. this mighty swing ended with a broken hand

third was also in college during infield practice in the indoor facility. I dove for a ball and as I was sliding my throwing hand got stuck on the turf and ripped the cartilage in my wrist

Probably a broken collarbone. I was skiing, and my friends and I were jumping and trying different tricks. I flew off of the jump and executed a perfect daffy (sp?), problem was, as soon as I landed I hit another bump which sent me flying again. I fell forward, and landed on my shoulder. I heard the crack as soon as I hit the ground, and knew something was wrong.

I broke that bad boy right in two. Broken collarbones are dammned inconvienient, because you have to wear the harness to hold your shoulders back so the bones stay aligned.

Nothing major for me.

Broke my nose when a grounder took a bad hop in warmups and hit me right between the eyes before a tournament game in HS. Still played the whole game and went 1 for 3.

Trying to play with blood running down the back of your throat for 3 hours isn't real enjoyable though.
