lets hope scUM can recover

I always root for that team up north (except for the last game of the season)... I know it's hard, but you must root for all big ten teams. We want the OSU vs. UM game to be the biggest regular season game NATIONWIDE!! (i'd like us both to be undefeated and serve them a beat down) just remember the better UM is, the more meaningful the game is to the BCS pollsters... lets not forget, it feels better to beat a good michigan team than a crappy one (although no matter what, beating them is sweet) I was at OSU during the cooper years, where beating UM was the last thing on his mind... He (cooper) was too busy shooting "Big Bear" commercials!!!

The Fiesta committee then chooses Notre Dame and Miami for their title game, which inexplicably ends in a tie since neither one can ever win a bowl game in the desert. :tongue2:.

hillarious! are you guys serious (the 63 of you that voted 13-0) about us winning the NC or are you guys just being homers? i think we lose one of our tough games and trip up one other time along the way (impossible to say where). 11-2 Don't get me wrong though, i'll take 13-0 and the NC

They might be plagued with injuries now, but I don't ever, EVER want to underestimate Michigan.
Bingo.

Im saying we roll, i really think we come out with a swagger and look like a FSU, Nebraska of the 90's and Miami, USC as of late.. this is through my heavily shaded scarlet and gray glasses though, i really think we can explode this year though.

But Michigan.. when they come to town im predicting were undefeated sitting at number 1 and they have 3 or more losses and come in ranked 15-25.. With Carrs job on the line, last years late comeback, "4-1", UM will come ready to play.

I picked us to loose two... both outside the conference, Texas and TBA...

Texas was more than Vince Young and is the only team we'll face with comparable speed. They bring in two excellent lines, a fast set of linebackers and depth at the corners and safeties and their fans are ready to remember the reception they got in Columbus.

I think the entire Big 10 is going to be down. Iowa lost a lot from a mediocre defense, MSU and Wisconsin will be breaking in a new coach, Baz is gone from Northwestern, Penn State won't be as good as last year, although there were a lot of sophs and frosh playing for them last year.. but we catch them in Columbus, it's going to be VLloyd time and then he'll have a necktie party in Effigy... a little village just outside of Ann Arbor. Who knows what's going to happen at Purdue and Illinois and Indiana stand a chance of beating each other.

Ginn worries me. I think his head was often elsewhere during much of last year. Do you sit him on kick offs and punts? Will he stand up without Holmes around.

Finally, last year's defense was the thing of dreams. We'll be good, but we won't come out and smash your cookies and then kick sand in your face.

I think we will have a season almost identical to Texas' 05 season for 06, I think we will have a serious scare early in the season from a National Championship Contender (Texas), take care of our rival fairly easily (Michigan) and defeat "The Greatest Team ever" in the National championship game (Notre Dame theywill go undefeated and will play very well but everyone will think they are the best ever because, it's Notre Dame).

Some gamblers like our chances of winning the National Championship. We are the favorite and they are not betting v$$$s either:

So, you think we'll "loose" to one of the following:
  1. Northern Illinois, at home
  2. Cincinnati, at home
  3. Bowling Green, at home
I'll bet real money we don't lose to any of these three...

Nah, baby, nah. I think we will loose a bowl game for the second loss cause we'll get a Florida team in the Orange Bowl... I'm always pissed because the bowls are used to determine final rankings and the sites all favor southern and western teams except the toilet bowl in Detroit and I don't see us going there.

Interestingly around half of you expect an undefeated season, when the probability is probably in the 10% +/- 5% range depennding on how big a homer you are.

I would be interested to see what your estimates are of the probability of winning each game. (For example a 35% chance of beating Texas) If you take that approach you can come up with a more reasonable distribution.

NEWSFLASH:

This is an Ohio State board.

Oh shit...I forgot....Only Texas can replace top level talent without experiencing a drop-off.

EDIT: Im also interested in finding out how you got those percentages about us going undefeated.

EDIT: Im also interested in finding out how you got those percentages about us going undefeated.

Think about how many teams actually go undefeated in a year. Of the top ten teams in preseason typically only one goes undefeated, if that.

In an example from a hornfans thread someone gave the following probabilities of Texas winning games on the 2007 (I know we shouldn't look that far ahead)
9/1 TBA 99%
9/8 TCU 75%
9/15 at Central Florida 85%
9/22 RICE 99%
9/29 KANSAS STATE 80%
10/06 vs. Oklahoma (Dallas) 50%
10/13 at Iowa State 70%
10/20 at Baylor 90%
10/27 NEBRASKA 70%
11/03 at Oklahoma State 75%
11/10 TEXAS TECH 70%
11/23 at Texas A&M 80%

Those numbers sound reasonable, but probably low in several cases. If you work out the statistics it is very roughly.
5% odds of 12-0
15% odds of 11-1
50% odds of 10-2
30% odds of 9-3 or worse

If you work up similar probabilities for your schedule, you can get a more normal distribution. In fact very few teams have much better than 10% odds of going undefeated in any given year. I voted 10-3 in your poll, because I think 11-2 and 10-3 are probably the most likely results, and I think Muchigan is due for a win over you.

I would be interested to see what your estimates are of the probability of winning each game. (For example a 35% chance of beating Texas) If you take that approach you can come up with a more reasonable distribution.

Football doesn't work on "distribution"...it works on the field. But, I'll follow your lead and then you tell me what our chances for an undefeated regular season are:

Northern Illinois 95%
Texas 60%
Cincinnati 95%
Penn State 90%
Iowa 65%
Bowling Green 95%
Michigan State 60%
Indiana 95%
Minnesota 85%
Illinois 90%
Northwestern 90%
Michigan 80%

Mili, Randy's right, football follows the same mathematics of probability as anything else. Just multiply the probabilities for victory in all of the games, to get the probability of going undefeated for the season. In the case of the probabilities you gave, it's ~9.5%.

Of course, after insisting on statistically logical analysis, Randy went in the opposite direction when he said that Michigan is "due" to beat the Bucks.
