What used car would you buy

AKAK,

I totally forgot about that eyesore... I've had my eye on an M Coupe (aka Z3 M Coupe) for a while. They were ugly, and not too many of them were sold. I think that is actually helping them maintain their value (limited number of cars out there). It is ugly... and has a nice power plant and is light weight.

I've found them in the price range I tend to stay around... only problem is the two doors... Mrs. Gbear will not let me purchase a two door car anymore. She wants baby gbears in a few years and has figured out any "newly" purchased car will be around when the babies come... I'm limited to four door cars... I'm not going to have kids for another few years and they're already costing me toys :(

Yeah... well-- that's the problem... the "third car" thing... anyway... I don't see why, if Mrs Gbear gets an SUV... you need a 4 door car too? (Of course... Women never see it "my way")

First I doubt she's getting an SUV... second, I'll just stick with a four door that can move... third, I don't want a the expense of a third car (esp. if it is a hand built engine that costs and arm and a leg to service)

This is an easy question for me to answer as I did just what the question posses, I bought a used car I really wanted three years ago. I picked up a 96 Audi A-6. It had just over 50,000 miles on it when I got it and I've been extremely happy with it. I now have 104,000 on it and no mechanical problems aside from the usual maintainence (I have a great mechanic nearby). I did switch over to syntheic oil as the car was leased and I didn't get very thorough records with it, and I'm damn near religious about following the company maint. guidelines. It's got quattro so it's fantastic in all weather, but especially in snow and rain. We take two weeks each year and head for Holden Beach, NC, a twelve to thriteen hour drive and it lives up to the Audi reputation as a fine road car. You arrive without feeling like it's going to take you a day just to get the cramps and road shake out of your spine. I think it has great lines, still. In fact it has more trunk space than the newer A-6s, but it's a bit underpowered (2.8 V-6) for a car of its size and weight.

Cinci,

My wife drives a simiar car (loaded up Passat)... same frame as the A-6, minus some of the fancy options, and a less stroked engine. Her Passat has the 2.8V-6 as well.

she has a '00... we purchased it a couple years ago with next to no miles on it (maybe 28k)... she's racked the miles. I think she is around 68k already. Fun car to drive, comfy on road trips... overal good car (because of that, I just might pick up an A-6 when my car kicks the bucket)...

Question for anybody: I'm going to be a 5th year senior at tOSU next year then going into electrical engineering $$$. I was thinking about going for a muscle car right out of college since I'll be unmarried and it would seem to be the best time to go for one. Any ideas or suggestions from people owning a good V-8 car in the past? I'd be looking to spend under $25,000 if at all possible and a couple years used is just fine.

golfer,

All I have to say is don't blow your load on a car. I'd suggest buying a condo/house (no sense in tossing money out the door unless you think you'll change jobs quickly, or housing is just too expensive... ie philly, DC, NY, San Fran. etc.).

Many guys buy these really nice cars after graduation (that depreciate rapidly), which leaves them with little cushon in their budgets.

I'd suggest you purchase a home, max your retirement plans as best you can, eleminate any debt (credit cards and student loans... student loan interest is deductable if you itemize, there is however an income phaseout... basically if you make good money, you cannot deduct the interest), build a cash reserve account for emergency purposes (fund it with a min. of 3 months income... 6 months if you can), then think about dumping money on a leasure expense (imo cars aren't assets, they are liablilities/expense).

With that said $25k is a bit high for a recent grad but isn't too bad on a car if you're making good money (good money is realative)... payments will be $575 for $25k at 5% over four years... remember the $25k would need to include price of the car and sales tax... over 7% in some area's.

What type of car are you looking for? Does muscle car mean mustang, or BMW type of a car?

Thanks for the advice. Actually my grandparents put a sizeable amount of $ in a mutual fund awhile ago and I was considering using part of that towards a car. I currently have no credit card debt and a perfect credit history. Being a new electrical engineer ina year I will be doing a lot of moving around the country and hopefully within a campany. The purpose of my question was just to get suggestions if I WERE to get a new vehicle. I am looking at any type of a fun V-8 car that can haul. I was wondering if anyone has owned any muscle cars in the past and could tell me what they were and if they would give them the thumbs up or down with all things considered including repairs and any problems etc...

Golfer,

I don't know how old you are, but I would stay away from any muscle/sports car types until you are over 25. If not your insurance will be as much as your car payment. Once you hit 25 there is a pretty sizeable rate reduction assuming you have a clean record.

I am always looking for used cars. Gbear I have been scouting out the 540's alot lately too. There are a million 02's out there right now that are coming in off of three year leases. I think as long as you have a winter set of tires you would be fine with any RWD.

If I could get any used car within reason I would get a 911 C4S. But since I now have 3 kids I would probably go with the M3 or M5 if I could afford it. Audi has some cool cars too, and they depreciate much quicker than Beemers do. You can get a good deal on a used S4, or A6 with the 2.7 turbo, or the 4.2 V8. Very similar performance to an M3 or a 540 but a lot cheaper.

I got rid of the 540 the day after it couldn't make it up my 50-foot long driveway which was lightly dusted with snow.... It was kind of fun driving it on the highway in the snow, not knowing which lane I'd end up in....

Solved that problem with a Range Rover.
Dude, snow tires are much cheaper!

For me, Porche Boxster. I get a new car about every 6-9 months, but I still look at used Boxsters. I work for a car company and get new vehicles all the time with cheap insurance that covers everything (no deductable, everything included...windshields, tires, etc. for unlimited miles). The Boxster has a classic look, and even the old ones from 98 look just like the 2006 models. Although a little underpowered for a sports car (the S isn't bad) it still handles sweet and the deal is good. Plus Porsche quality has gotten 100 times better.

Do you prefer Ford, GM (Pontiac, Chevy, Olds), or Chrysler (includes Dodge and Plymouth). I love the Hemi Cuda, but that's about $250,000, not $25,000. Yet for $25,000 you can get a really good muscle car.

Just a bit of advice. I'm an engineer, and make a good living. When I got out of college I thought I was making a ton. I suddenly realized that a home costs a ton! Get the muscle car when you are 30-40. Invest in a home now. The $ may seem like alot now, but trust me, it's not much in the big picture.

I got out of school and went in as a hot shot 2nd Lieutenant in the army. I bought a brand new '67 Camaro convertible and loved it. Then they shipped my ass overseas and I sold it for the remaining payments. One of my best friends was in the same situation, but he bought a used VW bug and two parcels of land just outside Seattle for about the same amount of money as I put into my Camaro. Guess who won on that deal? Let's face it, unless you're going to own the car for six to eight years you're going to loose money on it. 1/3 as soon as you drive it off the lot and 1/2 in the first three years.
