What song are you listening to right now

It seems that when people first "discover" classic rock, it has a snowball effect. You like Pink Floyd now (they are awesome, don't get me wrong), but you will probably be going nuts over ten bands you never heard of a week from now, and more after that, and so on. "Rock" is such a wide genre anyway, and unlike musicians today which are branded into cookie-cutter tabloid lifestyles, bands were more willing to be exploratory back then. For instance, when most people think of Led Zeppelin, they think hard rock, when half of their songs are acoustic. They do reggae, country, folk, psychedelic, blues, calypso, and even "oldies" 50s rock covers, but nobody really knows this unless they are a classic rock fan. If you went to a Led Zeppelin concert back in the day, it was cool to hear them cover songs by Elvis or Ritchie Valens or Fats Domino and they were very good at it. Artists today don't do that as much.

Anyway, I'm a white dude who has been eased back into rap music a little while ago. I blame my recruiter for the Marines. He gave me history lessons about rap music and CD's to listen to. He thinks most stuff on the radio today is garbage though. It's funny though, because I like Nas now. At boot camp these black recruits were shocked I rattled off "Affirmative Action" without any shame. It was funny, but they liked I knew a lot about rap music, even if it isn't my favorite type of music.

Don't know if any of you would like this kind of thing, but let me return the favor from the motherland...

Johnny Clegg and Savuka (This from the struggle years, mid-1980s. During the height of Apartheid, a University lecturer became widely accepted as "the white Zulu". The content was incredibly incendiary for the Whites. The dance steps, by the way, have meaning and tell a story in Zulu culture). I think Clegg, now much older, performed the other night at the World Cup draw. He is Mandela's favorite.

Asimbonanga means "we have not seen"...this gives the younger ones a sense of what South Africa used to look like when I first came here
