What should the punishment be for a play like this?

USC kid was just being a dumbass like Green. LSU kid almost certainly did his hit with malicious intent
I'm pretty sure it's an automatic suspension for first half next week, but not positive.

I agree it should be at least a full game and don't think it was an innocent mistake.

only issue is that next game is against Jacksonville St. so even if he sits that whole game, people will say somethin to the effect of "of course they'll suspend him for an FCS game, instead of one that matters"

so maybe he should also sit some of the Miss St game the following week as well.

I'd say he sits the 1st half of Jacksonville St as is the rule and then gets to serve any full game suspension(s) starting with the next game.

Strong response, Nutriaitch. Even though I personally think you're being a bit too hard on the young man.

had I not seen the camera view that shows him basically watching the Int and slide, I'd probably lean toward giving him the benefit of doubt.

but from that angle, it looks very intentional and malicious. that is not in any way shape or form what I want to be associated with LSU.

I feel for all sides on this issue, but it plays nicely into a piece I started writing for BP on when on the field actions reach into criminality.

Was this criminal? Yeah, probably not. But what if he knifed the guy, where is the line and the difference? What about trying to choke another player, why should that not be prosecuted? Etc.

IMO this was just across the line of poor sportsmanship and on the cusp of criminal
You sucker punch someone, you've committed assault
An important part of this discussion was whether it was during the course of play. So then we get to intent. Did he know play was stopped?

If he did know play was stopped, it was not in the realm of football, it was a criminal act. Or do we allow for emotions because "sports." But do we allow for emotions for a wife having her children taken from her, or whatever? No. So why in sports?

He knew the play was over
1) he was a lineman and he was no longer blocking nor feet moving; he was completely stopped and standing
2) that wasn't a tackle motion... that was a sucker punch motion

and that stomp in the groin in the other game was same
if one of these incidents wound up in court and successfully prosecuted, it'd stop

it shouldn't require this level of criminality

I agree with you in that I tend toward the criminality of such actions, but I understand all views, and it is a difficult subject.
