What is your opinion of Bose equipment?

Yeah, I know. But it was my mid-life crisis.

Next time just buy a sailboat and keep it in Fresh Creek all year round. It'll be more satisfying

You guys sound like a good friend of mine who I made the mistake of once asking advice on a surround sound system. I thought he would never shut up! You must have hearing like a dog to appreciate the sound. :wink2:

As to Bose, I have never owned one but have heard them and they were nothing special except for the design.

In college I had 2 DCM towers that had 2-12's 1-6 and a 3/4 tweeter. Coupled with a 200 watt Signet Subwoofer. The Towers ran at 2 ohms.

I burnt out about 2 receivers during parties unitl I got a two channel Yamaha that could handle them.

2 ohms is alot for home isn't it? Had a buddy who had a 2 12" (Dynamics somethings) he ran bridged down to 1/2 ohm. He used a high current 500watt amp (audio arts I believe). I don't know much about audio (mostly car very little home audio) but 2 ohms is alot of power for home speakers to take isn't it?

Only their headphones aren't crap. Though I confess to once owning Bose 901s, which were pretty sweet! Paid $750 for the pair!
There is some sweet gear out there.
Nad makes great gear at a reasonable price. Even used it's great.
Rotel and Cambridge Audio is great bang for the buck gear! Audioadvisor.com has a sale on the Cambridge gear.
Start with some good quality speakers. like Epos or Usher. Or even Polk. Build from there. Any questions give me a pm. I'll try to help.

Wonder if those dogging Bose actually own the product?

I have a Lifestyle 30 and Acoustimass 20 (powered add-on set) running together in the living room. 201's in the garage, 151's in the back yard, and 601's in the basement.

The two Bass modules in the living room really get it cranked up for movies. I think the problem that most have with Bose is that they are not set up for monster Bass. The sound on all my speaker sets is amazing. Completely crystal clear and with enough kick to make guests to my house go "Wow." I would certainly recommend.

Ohms aren't a rating of power but rather resistance to electrical current. The lower the resistance, the more current that will flow from the same amount of voltage. Most speakers used to be 8 ohms, and thus amplifiers were designed for that resistance. You start hooking your amp up to 4- and 2-ohm speakers and you're just begging to fry your amp.

Exactly! 2-ohm load is tough on most amps to handle for any length of time! Most speakers will run in a 4 to 8 ohm range.
My current system consists of a Musical Fidelity X-Ray v3 CD player to a Nuforce IA-7 integrated amp to B & W 603 speakers.
This is a simple but some what expensive set up.
I've been doing this as a hobby for 30 years.
I love my music. That's more important than the gear! :tongue2:

I set up my home theatre last summer. I took my geek God son along to tell me what to write checks for. Ended up with a Yamaha receiver and a set of Klipsch (sp) speakers for the surround sound. Excellent choice if I do say so, and no where near the cost of Bose.

I would say that speakers are like wine. There's no need to spend the bucks for Chateau Margeaux if a) Ripple makes you happy and tastes good to you. b) you don't like the taste of fine Burgundy

Also spent the bucks for a single remote. Matt lived at the house for a couple of days to program the damn thing, but now I can walk around the house and control the volume on four sets of speakers or sit in the theatre and control the DVD players, VCR & DVR.

The one remote took a while to catch on to, but it was worth the time and money.

This whole stereo business can get mind boggling very fast.
Try to keep things simple.

Start here.
A pair of speakers. This is the voice of your system. Do some research on line and in a real hifi showroom.(not Circuit City)

Than add a integrated amp or receiver.

Than, lastly a source. CD or DVD player or/an record player.

Keep it Simple Stupid!

Klipsch are some of the better speakers out there...
