A nice set of (cans) is a great way to get started in the Hi Fi hobby!
I have 2 sets of Grados! It's hard to beat Grado SR70s for the money, $70! :tongue2:
I love my Grado's but Sennheiser's are certainly no slouches.
For stereo speakers on a budget. Names like Epos, Usher, Polk, NHT, just to name a few reasonably priced speakers.
Internet/direct marketing combined with the rise of the mega chains has really shaken up the speaker market in a lot of ways. Some of the old standards in speaker manufacturers have changed their priorities a bit in order to accomodate the needs of the big resellers over the customer.
Likewise a host of smaller companies have filled the gap by offering great bang for the buck because they don't have to deal with the overhead imposed by dealer's & brick & mortar outlets. Heck even Magnepan is using direct marketing so that they can offer their MMGW's at a ridiculous price ($299 a pair) for what you get.
Rocket, Axiom, Energy & Athena (and the old standby Paradigm) are some other companies definitely worth checking out.
BTW believe it or not but Best Buy is currently offering a set of bookshelf speakers under their Insignia house name for $50 that are getting a lot of attention on the various boards for being a heck of a speaker for the price (kinda like the old Radio Shack/Optimus LX-5's with the Linaeum tweeter).

Right....sorry about that. I was thinking about that today and realized what you were talking about. I do think that those jumps are unacceptable, especially for the price. I was pretty tired as I tried to respond to that one...
In the interest of fairness I should point out that those two graphs are nowhere near the same scale. If they were the peaks & valleys on the Bose would look a good bit less exagerated.
