What have you bought b/c of a commercial?

Buckin' A

Veritas Aequitas
I was watching TV today thinking about the millions and millions that company's pay to advertise. I cannot think of much that I have ever bought b/c of a commercial that I saw. Maybe a new game or something.

I have never jumped in my car and rushed to the store to buy a Pepsi just b/c the commercial made me have to have one. How can all the money they spend actually pay off in sales? Millions for a 10 second spot in the Super Bowl?

So, has a commercial ever made you run out and buy something?

I'm sure the companies would love it if you did run to the store to buy all the Pepsi, but I don't think that's exactly how it works. The bigger issue is name recognition and branding. When you look at the soda aisle, are you more likely to get a Pepsi or some brand you don't know? People are much more likely to choose products if they have heard of them before, and Pepsi and Coke go well out of their way to brand themselves as not only familiar, but as the "big dogs" and therefore obvious choices.

For the other example... if you see two games that look interesting on the shelf, and you have seen commercials showing you what you are getting with one of them, which do you choose?

Agreed about the games. But, everybody already knows about Pepsi and Coke. How could paying 1 million dollars for a 20 second commercial during the superbowl ever make them any money?

And to answer your question...I walk right past coke and Pepsi and buy Sam's Choice...b/c I have 3 kids and a mortgage.:wink2:

How often do you stop and eat at a hole in a wall when traveling? Or do you stop at a major fast food joint or order pizza from a major branch?

I fit that mold, not necessarily b/c they convince me that Dominos is the greatest pizza ever... but that they have ensured taht I am very familiar with the product and will order again in the future.

How do you think "everybody knows?" Grassroots watercooler discussions? Granted, much of this type of advertising is maintenence. If they didn't continue to do the big splashy advertising, it would open the door for someone else to come in and become what "everybody knows."

A million dollars sounds like a lot, but they aren't looking for a one-to-one return on a particular commercial. It's just one part of a larger strategy in which total revenues have to exceed total expenses. One commercial with that level of prestige and that much coverage is a more efficient way to spend an advertising budget for a product of that size than a ton of smaller, less expensive efforts.

Donatos, on the other hand, is a Buckeye pizza

I understand what Deety and others are saying. But, I also know that Conn's are my favorite chips which I buy every time...and I have never seen one commercial for them.

Dude where did you grow up? I remember seeing the "uncle moses" or something like that growin' up. Local commercials. Horrible. The kids would always steal his Conn's 'tater chips.

You are right. Now that I think back, I remember hearing the "Everybody loves Conn's potato chips" commercials. But, that's just my point...I haven't seen one in years, and I still eat them. Everybody knows about Coke and Pepsi now...so why waste their money?
