What does it take before you call a video game great?

Last time I was in Texas for a business trip, I called one of the programmers/level designers, Charlie, at 3D Realms about arranging a tour he'd offered me a few years before. When I spoke to him then, he told me that DNF would be out for the PC in a few months.

I think that was the summer of either 2000 or 2001. :wink2:
Well it's only been in development since 1997 so I can understand how they still need some more time to tweak it. It's been a running joke in the game development business for so long that it even has it's own Wiki page:

Going back to the original Playstation, Chrono Cross was a really cool game. Anyone play that?
I have, I also played the predecessor on SNES (And rereleased on PS1), Chrono Trigger. Both games were pretty good, Chrono Trigger was probably the better of the two. Both stories were insane though, definitly something out of the ordinary and not your cut-n-dry plot.
My question is takes on MMO's like Everquest and WoW, are these games great? Or are they just instant messaging taken to the next level? I have seen relationships destroyed by these games, and I have seen relationships built by them as well.
MMOs are kind of a different animal from other console/PC games. With MMOs, companies are constantly adding new content in the form of dungeons, quests, equiptment, zones, etc. Some of this is free, other times it comes in the form of an expansion. Another big different between MMOs and other games is there generally is no "The End" to the game. If you were to vanquish some end all, be all villian, the game is essentially over and that kills subscriptions. Personally, I've played several MMOs, starting with EQ back in the day. If you break it down, a subscription adds up to $.50 a day roughly, hardly something to whine about when you consider what gets added to the game and the number of people that work on it.
Now, to answer your question I guess, I think some MMOs can be great games, I don't believe they're just instant messaging taken to the next level. I like playing with MMOs because I can play with rl friends, people I meet in the game, or play solo. I currently play World of Warcraft, its probably one of the better MMOs recently created. Theres less grind compared to older games like EQ, and more focus on quests/subplot. This adds for fun to the game in my opinion. Blizzard also cuts down travel time across the game world by implementing a variety of transport options. I'm all in favor of any features like these that cut down on wasted gaming time.

As far as games considered "great," its obviously a personal preference. Personally, I'm pretty open minded when it comes to games, I'll try about anything. Certain people, like my friends, won't play sports games no matter how fun they may be. Some games I've considered great/enjoyed, in no particular order: Final Fantasy series (IV, VI, VII favorites), Zelda series, Guitar Hero series, Neverwinter Nights, Mike Tyson's Punch Out, Contra, River City Ransom, Castlevania II and Symphony of the Night, Goldeneye, Final Fantasy: Tactics, Gran Turismo 3, GTA series, WWE Smackdown! series, NCAA Football series, Marvel vs. Capcom II, Super Smash Bros: Melee. I'm sure theres more, thats just whats on the top of my head

If I can sink 20-30 hours into a game and still want to keep playing and playing it, that's a great game in my mind. Hitman: Blood Money is way up on the list.

20-30 hours? Try 120 days played or 2880 hours. That on one character I have a few other characters with about 10 days played on them. I played console games till I started playing WoW a couple years ago. Sinc then the only time the trusty ps/xbox has been turned on was when internet was out. IMO its a great game:wink2:

They had to get Prey out first. At least that one only took nine years.

Duke Nukem Forever: First Image Revealed

3D Realms' George Broussard, one of the two creators of the Duke Nukem series, announced today that the first teaser trailer for Duke Nukem Forever will arrive tomorrow.

Last Saturday we had our annual company Christmas party. It was a lot of fun as usual but it featured one special surprise. It turns out that several people had been secretly working late nights and into the wee hours of the morning preparing a special video for those at the party. They created a short teaser for Duke Nukem Forever.

After seeing the teaser we thought it was something we should share with all of you and while it's just a teaser, rest assured more is coming.

See the first "new" image of Duke Nukem Forever, taken from the upcoming teaser trailer.

Yeah, I saw the teaser trailer yesterday. 10 years in development and they finally produce a rendered cut scene of Duke sitting on a weight bench and doing curls.

Fucking brilliant.

This game is not coming out.

Within a year, Broussard will scrap whatever they do have done on Unreal Engine 2 and make the switch to either the CryEngine 2 or Unreal Engine 3, just like they've done numerous times over the past 10 years.
