What does it take before you call a video game great?

So in the spirit of the thread, what makes them great?
1. The Halo Series XBOX
2. Gran Turismo PS
3. Grand Theft Auto III PS2
4. F.E.A.R. PC
5. Socom CA/Socom 1 [online]
6. Metal Gear Solid
7. Perfect Dark N64
8. Fall of Man PS3
9. DOOM PC
10. Super Mario 3

Theres no one thing that does it for me. mostly what seperates a good game from a GREAT one would be - whats unique, whats diffrent, whats revolutanary and still a kick ass game.

like gran turismo.. the graphics were nuts at the time (and the series still are) and all the things you could do - it was like driving your own car.. for me that was the first time i played a game with that much detail into how the car actually drives.

or like perfect dark or golden eye on the n64.. i remember when in goldeneye the bad guys would react to you shooting in another hallway

FEARs physics engine, grand theft auto 3 was a game that would keep me entertained for hours and was incredibly unique.

socom made me an online game from the console. and halo's online play was refreshing how goldeneye was.. it's a total party game but not at all at the same time.

For me, a great game has to be replayable. After 200 hours invested in it, you have to still want to play it again. You remember wanting to play it, and that makes you want to play it more, even ten years later.

The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is No. 1 on the list.

Sports games I don't enjoy as much. They're only as good as that years roster until the next edition. At this point, all they can add is eye-candy, and I'm just plain burned out.

The 3DO version of EA Sports FIFA Soccer was the pinnacle of sports video games. If you didn't spend the $400+ on a Panasonic FZ-1 in 1994 to play FIFA, you just can't understand how that game changed everything.

For me, replayability (is that a word?) is also the key.

tops on the list is Civ IV

Followed by Neverwinter Nights, Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 and, believe it or not, SimCity4.

If I come to the point where I don't want to play them because I'm afraid i'll get addicted and waste too much time playing, then it's a great game.

GTA: San Andreas is definitely up there, along with Vice City and GTA3.

Madden/NCAA, as well.

Going back to the original Playstation, Chrono Cross was a really cool game. Anyone play that?

Interesting topic, to me what makes a game great varies. Like I would call the Tekken series and Gran Turismo great for the purpose that friends could come over and we could sit for hours playing against each other and have fun the whole time, never getting bored. Whereas games like the Zeldas, Final Fantasys and some of the Metal Gear series were fun for the reasons that I could sit at home and play them, thus saving money.

My question is takes on MMO's like Everquest and WoW, are these games great? Or are they just instant messaging taken to the next level? I have seen relationships destroyed by these games, and I have seen relationships built by them as well.

A game is also great if the developers return my emails and ask me for opinions of what I thought about the gameplay, or ask permission to use my work on their official site.

Those guys from Apogee/3D Realms kick ass (especially Joe Siegler), so I've got to add Duke Nukem 3D and Rise of the Triad to my list.

Hey, next time you talk to the guys at 3D Realms ask them how Duke Nukem Forever is coming along. :wink2:
Last time I was in Texas for a business trip, I called one of the programmers/level designers, Charlie, at 3D Realms about arranging a tour he'd offered me a few years before. When I spoke to him then, he told me that DNF would be out for the PC in a few months.

I think that was the summer of either 2000 or 2001. :wink2:
