MoC, without question. We would have beaten Wisconsin last year and probably UM, and this year we would have beaten NW, Wisconsin & Purdue. That's at least 5 wins he would have landed for us.

I definately think MoC. Sure we may of won another NC and maybe a third, but I am also think we would of eventually gotten lack of institutional control if he would of stayed here due to him rolling in a new car or getting more than cell phones paid for.

Lets go back in time. Had Smith stayed in 1993 he would have been a Jr. in the backfield with Raymont Harris and Butler By'Note. It was Bobby Hoying's first year at starter and Joey Galloway was on the wing. That year we went 6-1-1 (10-1-1) tying Wisconsin, losing big to Michigan and ending up ranked 10th.

In 1994 add Orlando Pace, Eddie George and Shawn Springs to a team that went 6-2 (9-4) with losses at Washington, the drubbing at Penn State that Eddie was too hurt to play in, the Illinois game where George had fumble-itis and a one touchdown loss to Alabama. We ended up USA Today 9th and AP 14th.

Would Smith have elevated one of those teams to the NC?

With Clarett on the team would we have beaten Wisconsin and Michigan in 2003 and Wisconsin and Iowa last year?

I don't have a strong opinion one way or the other... that's why it's interesting to me that those who have posted so far emphatically say Clarett.

Interesting question, but Smith didn't play defense-wouldn't have helped us much against scUM in 93' or PSU in 94'. The Bucks just got waxed in those games. I'd go w/ Clarett-he would have made a huge difference in 03'-we beat Wisky IMO, and possibly scUM-the D got bitch slapped in that one too.

If we had Clarett in 03 then the offense mightv'e been able to stay on the field longer; giving the defense a rest. OSU would've beaten Wisconsin with Clarett, and the defense wouldn've been as tired, possibly leading to a victory over Michigan and a national championship, and a Heisman trophy for Clarett

so basically a lot of woulda coulda shouldas

there's no guarantee clarett woulda been out there for a lot of those games. unless he made some off-season body changes, he was always injury prone. he was a great back while he was here, but with the way USC played the last two years, he might not have brought home back to back NC's. woulda been great to see tho:)

Onlye a couple stated that we would have won 2 NC's (which is a huge homerism)... but winning 4-5 games more over the last two regular seasons is a dramatic improvement that MoC most likely would have provided.

With Smith we most likely would have still lost to Michigan in 93 and Penn State in 94 and not make the NC game either year.

With Clarett I still think we lose to Michigan in 03 and fall too far in the BCS for the NC game. I still think we would have lost to Iowa in 04 and again not make the NC game.

I think the impact of each could be measured by the running game they left behind and the controversies they both stirred up. When Smith left, at least we still had a strong attack with Raymont and Butler in 93. Ironically, I think he would have been more of an impact on the 94 team that Eddie George was not prepared to carry. Clarett left us with an average running game that still managed to get us to the brink of the NC game in 03, but was at times woeful last year. I think Clarett's departure impacted the team more than Smith's.

Smith's gripes about classes may not have become an issue again with Uzelac gone. But when we look at Clarett's situation it seems likely he would have had more NCAA problems if you look at the root of Troy's problems with the booster. Clarett also brought a negative media spotlight to the program that most likely will never fully go away while we're winning. I think Clarett's problems have had a much deeper impact on OSU and would have continued to if he had he stayed. But from a talent standpoint it's hard for me to argue against either guy.
Both were outstanding despite being bit by the injury bug.
