It's not like a burrito is fucking complicated. It's rice, meat, cheese, and toppings. Seriously. When I was staying in Tuscon, there was a guy selling homemade burritos and such out of the trunk of his car. Everything was already made and wrapped up, sitting in coolers. Damn good burrito to be honest, but not anything that couldn't be made by me at my house in Ohio.
reagdog;1464172; said:FYI - Shitty "Mexican food" joints always put rice and beans in every fucking burrito because they're too cheap to put in more meat or guacamole, etc... Rice and beans doesn't go in every burrito and neither does cheese. That's one way to spot the shitty Mexican places before you even order.
BUCKYLE;1464179; said:Well, I fucking hate beans anyway. And traditionally, beans are a staple of Mexican food precisely because they are cheap. Not like the Mexican people have been living the good life for a millenia. I like cheese, so I don't give a fuck what you consider "shitty". If it's got cheese in it, I'm more likely to order it. Besides, cheese isn't cheap. Ask anyone that's ever ran a pizza shop.
Btw, the burrito out of the trunk was fucking good. It had cheese, and the dude that was selling them said his wife makes them every morning. He was full blooded mexican.
Just because you live closer to Mexico doesn't mean there isn't any great Mexican food in Ohio. Not saying Chipotle is "great Mexican food", but there is a local joint here in Newark that is owned and ran by all Mexicans, and all the cooks are Mexican as well.

Rice
Steak (extra)
loads of cheese
loads of sour cream
I like my burrito simple.

reagdog;1464183; said:I'm not saying there isn't some good Mexican food in Ohio, I'm sure there is, but it's probably not as good as it is in AZ. Arizona is full of Mexicans and Mexican food. There is a higher probability of having better Mexican food in a place that has hundreds of Mexican restaurants all ran by Mexicans. I wasn't trying to bash all of Ohio saying all the burritos there sucked, but I'm guessing it's not very good if a burrito connossieur from Ohio lists Chipotle, Qdoba and some anglo Mexican restaurant names on a top 5 list. Would you eat at a place called Hector's Pizza or Mike Smith's Tacos? Probably not going to be authentic.
Arizona has lots of Mexican food ingredients and I don't know if you get the same stuff in Ohio. If you don't have the right ingredients, you're not going to get the same results. It's like having a seafood restaurant in Kansas.
Refried beans can be amazing!!! I also like cheese, but it just doesn't taste right on certain burritos and rightfully left off.
While Mexican immigrants are still settling in "traditional" destination states like California and Texas, over the last 10 to 15 years, the foreign born from Mexico, like other immigrant groups, have begun moving to "nontraditional" settlement areas. These include states in the South, such as Georgia and North Carolina, as well as Midwestern states, such as Nebraska and Ohio
BUCKYLE;1464191; said:This post is silly in so many ways. First of all, these days, you can get any ingredient anywhere in the U.S. You make a list of "authentic" ingredients in your favorite Mexican dish, and I bet I can go to Kroger down the street and find damn near every single one. If I can't, I can find a traditional replacement for that ingredient. There are, I'm sure, some fine seafood restaraunts in Kansas these days. You can get fish delivered same day accross the U.S.
Second, just because a white guy may own and run the mexican restaraunt, doesn't mean he is oblivious to how the food is traditionally prepared. Hell, at Anthony Bourdain's restaraunt in NYC, his head chef is Mexican. They don't make Mexican food there.
There may be a "higher probability" that most Mexican restaraunts in AZ are quality Mexican food. Doesn't mean that there aren't good to great...maybe even better Mexican restaraunts in Ohio, New York, or Minnesota for that matter.
Also, take a look at this...now I'm not saying that there aren't way more Mexicans in AZ, just that there are quite a few now settling in Ohio. To be honest, I saw more Mexicans in Georgia than when I was in Northern AZ.

reagdog;1464201; said:How many seafood restaurants in Kansas do you think fly in seafood on a daily basis? I bet maybe a handful if that. Point is, you're probably going to get better seafood on the coast.
You might be able to get the right ingredients in Ohio, but are they going to be the same? A good example is tomatoes. Tomatoes are great in the mid-west and they are horrible here in AZ. I can buy great tomatoes if I go to a high end grocery store and pay a shitload, but I'm probably not going to make the longer drive or pay the higher cost. So the tomatoes at my house aren't as good as the tomatoes at someones house in Illinois.
I don't know if Ohio has good jalapenos, poblano peppers, limes, green chile's, serrano's, mole, cilantro, habaneros and the other Mexican ingredients that are in every grocery store here in AZ. You can find most of those ingredients, fresh, dried, pulverized - basically any way you need it to spice up a dish. Arizona grows all of this stuff, so it's fresh and good. Just like tomatoes in the midwest.
I used to work at the Olive Garden when I was in college. All of the cooks were Mexican. Mexicans can cook anything, but good Mexican restaurants usually have Mexican owners who put together the ingredients and menu.
Northern Arizona has very few Mexicans. It's all white people and Native Americans. No crops are grown up north because it's too cold. They are all down here in Phoenix where there is a lot of farmland and more jobs.
I ate in a "good" Mexican food restaurant in New York and it was anything but "good." Some of my friends from AZ moved to New York and said it was the best place they had found in Manhattan.
BUCKYLE;1464213; said:Right, I'm not saying there aren't more good Mexican restaraunts in Ohio. Just saying that there are very good ones here. But one little thing there buddy...if it can grow in AZ...with the exception of maybe some peppers...it can grow better in Ohio.
