What can "Da U" do for you?

kevnow123;1620420; said:
The point was that when everyone wanted to follow notre dame and get the great white athletes and have a good image, miami was the one that said "hey these kids can play. Why not give them a chance to break the mold of an average kid in their situation." Miami recognized the greatness within these players and instilled a confidence in them that otherwise would not have been there. Miami created a sense of pride. Miami changed college football and let kids know that they don't have to be a rich christian athlete to play at a respectable program. No body cares to look at some of the situations the kids come out of and they just go about hating on them. Most of these kids had nothing to celebrate about but the U gave them a chance.

Wow...I just realized my post apparently started all this. Sorry about that everyone :slappy:

I never even saw this post, but I guess my response would be simple...calling Miami of the 80's a "respectable program" and talking about education given the Pell grant scandal pretty much destroys any credibility you would have on this issue...but then again, you already did that with your subsequent posts anyway.

That public school system does a great job of that. I've worked with inner city kids at one of our downtown preschools, and the teachers are awful. They don't teach any discipline. They let the kids screw off. And then these kids are turned down for highschool. Then they go about not caring about a thing. Many people seem content with just observing the situation and talking of how bad they are
Can we stop this yet?
No, he hasn't sold us a magazine subscription yet.

Though, he's right... the U has helped a lot of guys that otherwise wouldn't have had a chance.

Gino Torretta
Craig Erickson
Steve Walsh
Ken Dorsey

If these guys had gone to school anywhere else, they never would have been hyped enough to become such spectacular busts.

I will admit, I did take it overboard, but dubbing miami university "thug U" and failing to recognize any positives is a little overboard, in fact it's pretty hypocritical. They were not greatly disciplined players, but plenty of other respectable programs aren't innocent.
Why not compare say PSU UTenn FSU UF OSU, … etc. and their sheer lack of control over their players behavior, academic scandals, car stereo and weapons, B&E, drugs, rape, etc since 2002 to the Huricanes of the 80s?...Are you saying rape isn't bad as long as you don't “act like a thug on the field?” How about drug charges? Wear a traditional uniform with a legend of a coach and it really isn't bad as long as you act right on the field? And if a kid can get off the streets and become a professional football player, I'm fine with that. Yeah, I’d much rather have the kid make something of his education than sports, but if it gets him out his previous situation, then that’s a positive. People love to dwell on the negative. Would you call the Alabama football program racist because it took them so long to integrate? (1970's) Didn't think so, and you shouldn't.
Notre Dame never took responsibility or tried to out a stop printing of "Catholics vs Convicts" shirts. They never apologized for the behavior of their fans perpetuating stereotypes or being disrespectful. Miami is a respectable program and has won the American Football Coaches Association's 2009 Academic Achievement Award presented by the touchdown club in Memphis. The contributions of "the U" to college footbal were enormous. Have you ever read the Caine Mutiny. It does a great job of describing how a group of inner city kids, with gold teeth and do rags took on the establishment and changed the landscape forever. Miami is a small university. About 10,000 students and about 50% of its classes have 16 or fewer students. It doesn’t have the traditional massive funding sources of the traditional powerhouses, but it still manages to be great. The U is a family. Every year, new players are mentored by former players, who came back in their off-seasons and train with these players. The U’s football program may not get all the respect, but it comes to play on Saturdays and also brings it on Sundays. The U brings emotion to the game. The best part about it is that it is the program everyone loves to hate. This is why it's a Canes thing, and you wouldn’t (and clearly don’t) understand. I'm a big buckeye fan but I'm not blind to the fact that he's had 26 players arrested. Miami unjustly gets a bad rap, when it takes in kids from less than average socioeconomic situations. Their discipline could probably have been better, and now it is. In the past ten years had 4 players arrested.

Keep rambling on...all the while refusing to explain exactly how taking money that was supposed to go the the poorest kids who CAN'T throw a fucking ball to actually give them a fighting chance to make it and giving it to the kids who CAN throw a ball and are on full scholarship so they can go clubbing is somehow not an inherently evil concept.

Oh so they should apologize for being arrogant and antagonistic, but when the U does it, it's lovable and us against the world. It's something small minded folks like us could never understand like you in Toledo.

Good work on copying over one of your past quests to defend Miami's honor. If you'd actually engage folks directly rather than resorting to outrageous hyperbole, you might notice that many folks have talked about how Miami was hardly unique in their off-field troubles. They just played up that angle much louder than most.

Calling miami thug u is hyperbole. I'm not saying Notre Dame should apologize. I'm just pointing out that they havn't, and that, even though they are looked at by many (don't know if you do) as the most respectable program out there, they aren't much better. I thought they were supposed to be the bigger man. The oonly one that was the bigger man was Lou Holtz for discontinuing the rivalry.

The game thread for the Miami - Ohio State game next year should be VERY INTERESTING. I'm pretty they've all gotten over the 2002 National Championship. So that's good...

:bonk:

I"m willing to bet good money the intro video the broadcastor shows before our game starts off with footage from the championship. Toss in "revenge"
"bitter" etc etc and you have quite an intriguing story line.

I've waited long to play those fuckers again, and 2010 is right around the corner.

I can't believe the 2010 preseason rankings have miami down around #20. This game will have much more national significance. The '03 championship only adds to it, as well.
