I will admit, I did take it overboard, but dubbing miami university "thug U" and failing to recognize any positives is a little overboard, in fact it's pretty hypocritical. They were not greatly disciplined players, but plenty of other respectable programs aren't innocent.
Why not compare say PSU UTenn FSU UF OSU, ? etc. and their sheer lack of control over their players behavior, academic scandals, car stereo and weapons, B&E, drugs, rape, etc since 2002 to the Huricanes of the 80s?...Are you saying rape isn't bad as long as you don't ?act like a thug on the field?? How about drug charges? Wear a traditional uniform with a legend of a coach and it really isn't bad as long as you act right on the field? And if a kid can get off the streets and become a professional football player, I'm fine with that. Yeah, I?d much rather have the kid make something of his education than sports, but if it gets him out his previous situation, then that?s a positive. People love to dwell on the negative. Would you call the Alabama football program racist because it took them so long to integrate? (1970's) Didn't think so, and you shouldn't. Notre Dame never took responsibility or tried to out a stop printing of "Catholics vs Convicts" shirts. They never apologized for the behavior of their fans perpetuating stereotypes or being disrespectful. Miami is a respectable program and has won the American Football Coaches Association's 2009 Academic Achievement Award presented by the touchdown club in Memphis. The contributions of "the U" to college footbal were enormous. Have you ever read the Caine Mutiny. It does a great job of describing how a group of inner city kids, with gold teeth and do rags took on the establishment and changed the landscape forever. Miami is a small university. About 10,000 students and about 50% of its classes have 16 or fewer students. It doesn?t have the traditional massive funding sources of the traditional powerhouses, but it still manages to be great. The U is a family. Every year, new players are mentored by former players, who came back in their off-seasons and train with these players. The U?s football program may not get all the respect, but it comes to play on Saturdays and also brings it on Sundays. The U brings emotion to the game. The best part about it is that it is the program everyone loves to hate. This is why it's a Canes thing, and you wouldn?t (and clearly don?t) understand. I'm a big buckeye fan but I'm not blind to the fact that he's had 26 players arrested. Miami unjustly gets a bad rap, when it takes in kids from less than average socioeconomic situations. Their discipline could probably have been better, and now it is. In the past ten years had 4 players arrested.
