My last few:

Lolita by Vladmir Nabakov - some of the most beautiful writing and genius I have ever read, but it left me disturbed and I would not necessarily recommend.

The Passenger by Cormac McCarthy - this is McCarthy's new and long-awaited release. I enjoyed it thoroughly and will be re-reading it soon. Heavy on grief, physics and psychology, among other things. Its companion novel, Stella Maris will be released next month.

Child of God by Cormac McCarthy - shorter McCarthy work. It's dark and entertaining. Some of the ideas and themes from his other works like Blood Meridian are present.

It is an interesting example of how cultural progress changes the critical lense (Polansky is also a great example). I read Lolita in the 70s and while disturbing it didn't seem all that shocking (what with all the rock stars banging 14 year olds in the crudest and most demeaning fashion--and with nothing remotely like the lyricism of Nabakov's portrayal of Humbert). Had to be an emotionally difficult novel to write.

Not currently reading, but, in honor of his standout game yesterday, Jack Sawyer is the main character in Stephen King's and Peter Straub's fantasy novel The Talisman. It was one of my favorite books from when I was young. Netflix is also developing it into a show, with a powerhouse team being hired to create it: Stephen Spielberg and the Duffer Brothers / Curtis Gwinn of Stranger Things (where the book made an appearance at the end of last season).

Finally finished Under the Banner of Heaven. I decided to read this book because I enjoyed the mini-series so much that I thought the book might provide even greater depth and insight to the Mormon Detective and the events around the investigation.

Unfortunately, this was not the case. This book was mainly a history of the LDS and FLDS and it’s influence on the murders. I must have picked it up and put it down at least 10 times over a long period of reading it. The book had very little to do with what was in the series.
