To be clear, Cormac McCarthy is incredibly talented. Blood Meridian is one the best reads ever for wordsmithing and image conveying.

But the Road - I dunno - as a father of two boys, it was heart rending.

Next time you need a pick me up turn to some of his early stuff. The Outer Dark makes The Road read like a comic book. And there is of course The Orchard Keeper - a book based loosely on the limerick "There once was a hermit named Dave....."

Dark as they are they are the books that made me a McCarthy fan.

Yulp Outer Dark is one of the darker books I have ever read but it was a pretty entertain and quick read. His newer stuff reads just like a movie script, but his older stuff I had to reread some parts to make sure I really read that.

Try World War Z. Not really post-apocalyptic, but seen through the eyes of the guy who's writing the post zombie war analysis for the UN. It's not Dostoevsky, but it made for a good airplane read.

Enjoy! It's not the most polished product on the zombie-lit market, but I think being a little rough-around-the-edges helps it feel more authentic as a "found-document" sort of book.

It has been too long since I read early McCarthy and I had "Child of God" confused with the "Orchard Keeper". It is "Child of God" that has a necrophiliac theme - not that there is anything wrong with that.

Good read, although his early stuff leads you to the inescapable conclusion that he is one sick fuck.
