So it doesn't make a mockery of his TnG character? I've only skimmed a few twitter reviews, but they've been dreadful

About 5 episodes in and not overly impressed. It doesn’t feel much like a Star Trek show if that makes any sense. I’ll continue to watch and probably check out Discovery as well.

I think Patrick Stewart didn't want it to feel like a TNG reboot so they've gone out of their way to stay away from that. There is some fan service and easter eggs spliced in. TNG is my favorite show of all time and the line that all series finales are judged against so I'm possibly watching it with rose colored glasses. I do think the first 5 episodes were a little slow so maybe your impression will improve by the end. The biggest loser in this is the current state of the Federation, but you get that from the first episode.
Discovery took some time to find its groove. It's less Trek than anything else especially in season 1. If you are going to start I'd at least get a few episodes into season 2 before you think of pulling the plug. I think Picard would have been better if it ended as 1 season. The Short Treks after season 2 were pretty good. Some of the other Star Trek universe shows they have in the works might be good. The crossover i've heard mention of not so much.
