West Virginia/JUCO/C.W. Post/Kean RB Jason Gwaltney (official thread)

USC and OSU lead, but WVU is also in the mix.

WVU visited Thursday.

JT and several assistants visited Wednesday. Jason comments:

"Ohio State was very direct and straight up. They told me how much they needed me and how I was the perfect sized back for the Big Ten. They talked about Big Ten football and how I would be used. They said I could come in right away and challenge from day one."

We had a chance to get a few quick words with five-star running back Jason Gwaltney of North Babylon, N.Y. a few moments ago. It sounds like everyone will know Gwaltney's decision when Jason does.

There was word that running back Jason Gwaltney of North Babylon, N.Y. was going to take one final unofficial visit to West Virginia this weekend, but Gwaltney said he stuck around at home.

"I didn't go to West Virginia this weekend," he said. "I'm sticking with my schedule. I'm going to be making my announcement on Tuesday."

When asked if he knew what school he was going to, Gwaltney, who had his last in-home visit from a coach on Thursday, was adamant that he didn't know yet.

"I absolutely do not," he said. "It's still the same three schools. I'm not sure right now, but I'll know by Tuesday."

Despite all of the speculation and rumors floating around involving JG, I think it is important to remember that Jason is just a teenager trying to make a difficult life decision. And wherever he goes, I have read a lot of things about Jason that have impressed me, whether it was Jason on the field or Jason off the field. Here is an example of what I mean...

<TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=5 bgColor=#d0d0d0 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD align=middle></TD></TR><TR><TD align=left>TAKING TIME FOR THE KIDS – The star of North Babylon's football team, Jason Gwaltney took time away from the field to spend some time in the classroom with Kathi Godfrey's 5th grade class at Marion G. Vedder Elementary School. Gwaltney who has been setting records, most recently for Long Island's rushing record talked to students about the importance of setting goals and achieving them. He urged them to never give up on their dreams and to always give 110% percent in anything they do. The children were excited and inspired by the visit. Gwaltney also signed autographs on footballs for the students.</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

So on Wednesday, whether Jason decides to head West, to Morgantown, or to Buckeye Country, let's all remember that Jason is just one player and despite the nature of his recruitment, this is why we all follow this stuff.

Jason Gwaltney will play football at West Virginia next fall, a family source has told Newsday. Gwaltney made his decision, which he plans to make official tomorrow morning, late Sunday.

Long Island's all-time leading scorer and rusher and two-time Hansen Award winner, made his decision after months of contemplation.

Gwaltney had narrowed his choices to West Virginia, USC and Ohio State. He will announce his decision tomorrow at a press conference scheduled in the North Babylon High School auditorium at 10 a.m.

"It's been a very long road to make a decision," said North Babylon coach Terry Manning. "No, let me change that, because it's been a ridiculous road to a decision. It's been very stressful on the kid and Team Gwaltney. We've investigated and checked out every school to a tee. And I know he's put a tremendous amount of energy in making the right choice and that he's comfortable with his decision. But he did change his mind like 16 times so until he signs that piece of paper -- I'm not convinced he's going anywhere."

Gwaltney, who'd made a verbal commitment to West Virginia last year, was visited by coaches from all three schools last week and spent the better part of Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday trying to decide which school best fit his needs.

"I've had such a tough time making a decision because everyone involved has been so accommodating and made such a great presentation about their school," Gwaltney said. "There are so many reasons why I should go to USC. And so many reasons why I should go to Ohio State. And West Virginia started recruiting me when I was a sophomore. I have changed my mind so many times."

"I didn't sign at the Army All-American Bowl in Texas because I still wasn't sure," Gwaltney said. "I've gone through post visit syndrome. Every time I visited a school -- I'd come home and rave about the place and tell my people that I want to go there. Then, after the visit wears off, I start to think and get confused."

Gwaltney detailed the postives and negatives about each of his three suitors.

"There was really no bad in any program," he said. "I needed to find the program where the shirt fits just right."

Gwaltney may have found that fit when he bought himself a plane ticket and flew down to West Virginia on Friday and spent two days off campus in Morgantown. The unofficial visit gave Gwaltney an opportunity to give West Virginia one more look.

Scooter Berry, Gwaltney's half-brother, will also play for the Mountaineers.

The Sunday announcement obviously never happened; also Jason, in a conversation with Duane Long, denied the weekend visit to Morgantown. More obfuscation here....

We'll wait until Wednesday....

Just Spoke With Gwaltney

He wants me to quote him on this "It is not true at all" regarding his comittment to WVU...

He just got out of school and more to come....

He is adamant that the story is not endorsed from the wv paper

straight from jasons mouth...

Something does not smell right...

He vehemently denies any rumors that he is headed to WVU, going so far as to tell Duane that he is not comfortable with the surrounding there. There are reports that both the USC and OSU staffs are confident with where they are with Jason. Then there is the wide speculation about whether or not he visited WVU this weekend.

Too much smoke and mirrors going on here...

Alan, BP's own recruiting guru, has debunked the Gwaltney to WVU rumor. I'm closing this back up until he really commits some place.

New development: The Newsday reporter now admits that he basically made up the Gwaltney story.

In speaking to Sarra, he agreed that this was a guess, albeit an informed one.

"Nowhere does it quote Jason that he's going to West Virginia in the article," said Sarra. "It's speculation. That's where we think he's going based on what we know."

Gwaltney still said he's leaning towards Ohio State and Southern Cal with West Virginia just behind them.

"That's where it's at, quote me on it," he said. "I am still in the decision-making process. All three schools have a chance."

Rivals $

Jason is furious over the Newsday article and contacted the author who was basically speechless. Gwaltney is adament that he has not reached a decision yet and had to explain that to Coach Tressel who contacted him to see what was going on. According to Jason, everything in the article is bogus.

"I've wanted West Virginia, Ohio State and USC at different times," he said. "I still don't know where I'm going and the coaches don't either. How Newsday knows is funny."

The author of the article, Gregg Sarra, claims now that the article is purely speculation on his part and he did not mean to cause such an uproar.
