I blame unimaginative and copycat Xgen coaching staffs.
I'm certain this started at a HS, it just has that feeling. And it was probably a cool way to spice things up for that school.

But then everyone and their mother got on the bandwagon and shamelessly copied it. Just like all the trash in Hollywood. They find a gimmick that works once, and the next 20 years we're subjected to sequels, prequels, remakes ... etc. etc. etc.
Nobody has an original idea.
