The Monsters are "collectible. Mine doubled in value a week after I bought it. It's 2nd generation with the "teeth" style indices.

Doubt my orange Seiko has any collectability at all, though they did run that series for only a year before discontinuing them, so scarcity might be something. Also, for a Seiko 5, it has the better H36 movement that hand winds and hacks and an exhibition back. We'll see. It makes a good beater watch in the meantime though. Plus, I like it and wear it a good deal more than I thought I would.

And I did break down--in an opioid fueled haze--and ordered one of those Islander watches. I'm stunned by the amount of quality this guy is packing into a watch for this price: lumed ceramic bezels, sapphire crystals, applied raised hour indices with steel borders, solid link bracelet with screws.

And on a knockoff of the new "No Time To Die" Bond NATO.

OK- Gonna be a bit of a longer post. First off, huge "THANK YOU" to @ORD_Buckeye for his letting me brainstorm and sending me the right direction.

First, I reached out to Elwood to ask about a watch recommendation for a gift. He suggested a number of options, including this great Baltic one that I ended up purchasing.

So at this point, my ADD is fixated on watches. And, thanks to the interwebs, all of the advertising that shows up on every site I visit is for timepieces. So, even though I've not worn a watch since high school... I'm shopping for a watch.

Doing a little research and such, I discovered that my grandfather had an Elgin Ordnance that he wore on an Army issue canvas strap. But when my dad sent it to me, it was actually one that had a black dial (and the crystal was cracked, it didn't run, etc. etc. etc.). So much for fixing and wearing this... it went into my keepsake box.

But I liked the look of the black dial, so ORD pointed me towards the Flieger ("flier") style, and made a couple of suggestions (including a great Seiko and a popular Hamilton).

At some point, though, he encouraged me to take a look at the watches being put out by Marc at Long Island Watches; speaking highly of their business model, their customer service, and even some of the "in house" things they were doing (it's what he posted earlier).

So, yup- that's what I ended up getting... not a huge cash outlay, sapphire crystal, screw down crown and hacking for the second hand, and just the right size. Here's a video that Mark put out with the details. (and I'll finish this story in the next post).

Ok, so with this on the way, I obviously needed a bit of "flair", particularly if it allowed me to rep Ohio State out here among all the husky (weight) Husky (mascot) fans.

Again, ORD was the man, and pointed me to BluShark (high quality and good pricing if you can catch one of their regular B2G3 deals). I ended up going with three NATO straps- A basic black and gray Bond strap, another Bond style strap that's a bit more "gameday", and a basic black with a subtle scarlet line (which is what I've got on it now).

Interestingly enough, those all showed up the same time my watch did AND the same time that three other straps did (sent by the guy I bought the Baltic for). Here's the whole collection and the watch itself.

Really glad they all arrived simultaneously- The leather strap is nice, but for a guy who's not worn a watch in 35 years, it was a bit bulky.

Those three on the left are the ones from my buddy- I'm not sure where he got them, but can dig if anyone wants a referral. They're a lower quality (rougher on the skin) than the BluShark ones, and a bit shorter in length (I'd probably wear them via the Over-Under method shown here). The last one is a "scuba style"- I'll show that more in the next post.

And now, the "money shots"
Stripes.jpg ThinRed.jpg Helmet.jpg
That last one is kinda' cool in that it looks like the stripe on the helmet. I asked about a strap with buckeye leaves on it, but no one could decide if they were green or black.

Here's that "scuba strap"
Scuba2.jpg Scuba.jpg
It's on a stretchier band, and fits really snug (I hate things rattling around on my wrists)... but it's a real PITA to change out (in comparison with the classic NATOs).

So, TLDR version- BP is the best, @ORD_Buckeye is amazing, I now know what time it is, and both my grandfather's military legacy and the Buckeyes are being proudly represented on the north side of Seattle.

So Rolex is going to have their grand unveiling of their new 2020 watch tomorrow. Here's a little hint. It'll be the same god damned watch that they've been making for 40 years but in a new color, and the Rolex cult will all go nuts and argue that it's revolutionized Swiss watchmaking and totally justifies a year on a waiting list or spending twice retail on the grey market.

And it'll still have that hideous cyclops window on the date.

Well, I'm still eyeballing one of those Seiko 5's you pointed me to, and I would certainly be open to a diver in the correct colors (maybe... still not keen on a bezel).

But, to be honest, there's a "holy grail" watch I've had my eyes on for years.

Don't fear the bezel. What are the proper colors? No blue?

And you joke, but there apparently is a sub-cult of watch geekdom of collectible Casios.
